UNITED STATES JOSEPH. C. SINEL, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BOX.
Application filed November 3, 1921. Serial No. 512,554.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr C. SINEL, a citizen of New Zealand, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have made a new and useful inventionto wit, Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates particularly to an ornamental container and cover therefor.
An object of this invention is to provide a receptacle which may be either, fixedly or detachably, secured to a suitably arranged A further object of the invention is to provide a container, of this character, that will be superior in point of simplicity, and inexpensiveness of construction, positiveness of operation, facility and convenience in use and general efliciency. Other objects and advantages will appear as this description progresses.
In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms; and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims following the description, it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
In the accompanying one sheet of drawings2- Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a container constructed in accordance with my invention and partly opened to show the interior thereof.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged View of Fig. 1 illustrating the container and open cover in separated relationship.
Fig. 3 is a section taken through Fig. l on the line 33. V
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a folded container and cover constructed in accordance with my invention.
In detail, the construction illustrated in the drawings, comprises a container, generally designated by the numeral 1, and a cover adapted to enclose the container, designated by the numeral 2. The container 1 consistsof a rectangular receptacle, such for instance as a candy or stationery box, and is either openfaced or provided with a cover 3. The
particular type of container 1 is immaterial and folded at 6 and 6 respectively, to form the side walls 7 and 8 and the 9 and 10, respectively.
The container 1 is preferably of the same cross-sectional area as the bottom segment 4 and is either fixedly or detachably secured end portions to said bottom portion 4. Where the container would be fixedly mounted on the bottom portion 4, glue, pins or other fastening means would be used for securing the respective elements together or where it is desirable to have the container independent of the cover, I have provided wedge shaped projections 11 on the under side of said container 1, which are adapted to detachably engage suitable projections or loops 12 on the upper face of the portion 4. The pro jections 11 would be formed from cardboard, celluloid or other similar material. After the container 1 has been desirably placed on the bottom portion of the cover, the end 10 of said cover would be lifted so that the .side wall 8 would lie snugly against the side 8 of the container, and the end 10, being substantially of the same area as the box would be folded so as to lie over and entirely cover the top of the container 1. It should be noted that the inner face of the side wall 7 8 of the cover is of the same width or heighth as the side 8 of the container.,
Suitable loop straps 1 1 are provided on the outer face of the side portion 8 for the purpose to be hereinafter described in detail.
The opposite end 9 of the cover would be then elevated so that its side portion 7 (of which the inner face is of the same heighth as the side wall 7 of the container), would snugly engage the side wall 7 and permit the end 9to be folded so as to lie over and entirely cover the end 10. Referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the area of the cover 9 is equal to the area of the container or folded end 10 whereby the edge 15 of the portion 9 will lie coterminous with the crease 6. Adjacent the edge 15 of the end 9, I have provided suitable fiexiblestraps 16 with ornamental wedges 17 thereon, which are adapted to engage the loops 14 for the purpose of positioning the said cover 2 tightly about the container 1 The container and cover are capable of being artistically treated with suitable decorative matter and when so rendered, are transformed into very attractive articles. The manner of folding the cover about the container gives it the appearance of a portfolio and it would be clearly within the purview of this invention to utilize suitable creased and folded covers as portfolios for boxes, books, papers and the like.
Having thus described this invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2-"- V A device such as described, comprising, in combination, a container; "projections on the under face of said container; a cover having means thereon adapted to detachabl-y engage the projections of said container, said cover comprising a sheet of material creased and foldable into middle, intermediate and end sections which are engageable respectively with the bottom, sides and top of said container, the end sections being adapted to overlap each other on the top of saidcontainer; and latch means, on an end and intermediate section for engaging each other.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, California, this 29th day of October, 1921. I JOSEPH G. SINEL. In presence of- LINCOLN V. JOHNSON.
