SAMUEL STEDEKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOLDER FOR BOOKS OR OTHER ARTICLES.
QPEGIFIG ATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 716,128, dated December 16, 1902.
Application filed July 12, 1962.
To all whorrt it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL STEDEKER, a citlzen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State person sitting in a chair, so as to hold a book,
writing-pad, or other article; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists 1n a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described an d claim ed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of-my improved holder for booksavriting-pads, or other articles and showing the method of using the same; Fig. 2, a front view of the holder; Fig. 3, aside View thereof, and Fig. 4. a plan view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class specified comprising a main oblong body portion a, composed of sheet metal or any other suitable material and concaved in cross-section on' its under side and convex on its outer side and adapted to be placed on the leg of a person sitting in a chair, as shown in Fig. 1, and to fit said leg adjacent to the knee and provided at its front end with a downwardly-directed member a which overlaps the knee and prevents the backward movement of the holder, and the parts a and a of the holder are adapted to fit and conform to the knee and that portion of the thigh adjacent to the knee, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The sides a of the holder may be made of spring material and wide enough to grasp and hold the thigh when placed thereon without any other means of attachment, or the said Serial No. 115,299. (No modal.)
sides may be provided with straps by which the device may be secured to the leg or thigh. (Shown in Fig. 1.)
The body portion a of the holder is provided with two parallel keepers b, in which is mounted a slide 0, provided with an upwardly-directed knob, projection, or head 0 provided with a socket adapted to receive a pin 61, provided with a head (1 to which is pivoted a support 0, which is semitubular in form and provided centrally of the back and near the lower end thereof with jaws 6 between which the head d of the pin dis secured by means of a pin d provided at one end with a thumb-nut 01 The support 6 is provided at its opposite sides with wings or plates 6 on which. are mounted laterally movable supplemental wings or plates f, which are connected therewith by means of pins f secured to the wings or plates 6 and passing through slots f formed in the supplemental wings or plates f, and said supplemental wings or plates f are provided at their upper and lower edges with flanges or keepersf, which overlap the upper and corresponding edges of the wings or plates e and assist in holding the supplemental wings or plates in position, and said supplemental wings or plates are also provided at their outer edges each with keepersf ,which are designed to receive the free or outer edges of the sides or backs of a bookbinding, as shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to support a book on the holder.
The bottom keepers f at the bottom edges of the supplemental wings or platesf are also provided with forwardly-directed extensions f which serve as supports for the book and prevent it from slipping downward off of the wings or plates f, and by providing the supplemental wings or platesf and making them laterally adjustable the device is adapted for use in connection with books of different sizes, and the said su pplemeutal wings or plates may be held in any desired position on the wings or plates 6 simply by frictional contact therewith.
It will be observed that the support 6 may be turned laterally or forwardly and backwardly, the lateral turning thereof being accomplished by means of the pin (1, which is movable in the head 0 and the forward-and- Lil backward turning of the support 6 being ac= complished by means of its connection with the head of the pin (1.
The entire device may be made of any suitable material; but all the parts thereof are preferably made of sheet metal, and it will be apparent that the part 6 of the support need not be exactly semitubular in form, and various changes in and modifications of the separate parts of myimprovement may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope of my invention.
In Fig. 1 ofthe drawings I have shown at g a book supported on my improved holder and in position for use, and it will be apparent that the support member may be moved longitudinally of the part a, so as to bring the book nearer to or farther from the eyes of the reader, and the said book may be also turned laterally or moved forwardly or backwardl y, and the exact position necessary may thus be attained at all times. The device may also be used for holding a writing tablet or pad and various other articles, such as artists or drafting materials.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device of the class described comprising a body portion adapted to be placed on the thigh of a person in a sitting position and having side members which inclose the thigh and by which it is held thereon, a slide movable longitudinally of said body portion, and a book-support connected with said slide and adapted to be turned laterally and moved forwardly and backwardly, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a body portion adapted to be placed on the thigh of a person in a sitting position, a slide movable longitudinally of said body portion, and a book or other support connected with said slide so as to be turned laterally or moved forwardly and backwardly, said support being provided with side wings or plates projecting laterally therefrom, and with laterally-ad j ustable supplemental wings or plates connected therewith, substantially as shown and described.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a body portion adapted to be placed on the thigh of a person in a sitting position, a slide movable longitudinally of said body portion, and a book or other support connected with said slide so as to be turned laterally or moved forwardly and backwardly, said support being provided with side wings on plates projecting laterally therefrom, and with laterally-adjustable supplemental wings or plates connected therewith, said supplemental wings or plates being provided at their outer edges with keepers and at their bottom edges with supplemental supports, substantially as shown and described.
4:. A device of the class described, comprising a main body portion adapted to be placed on the thigh of a person in sitting position and to clamp and hold the same, said main body portion being provided with a downwardly-directed knee portion, and at the top thereof with two longitudinal keepers, a slide mounted in said keepers and provided with a knob or head, a pin mounted in said knob or head and adapted to turn laterally therein and a support pivotally connected with said pin and adapted to turn forwardly and backwardly, said support being adapted to hold a book or other article, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of July, 1902.
SAMUEL STEDEKER.
