No. 687,444. Patented Nov. 26, l90l.

YUKE FOB GAR COUPLINGS.
(Application fi lerl June 25, 1901 (no Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES TIMMS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUCKEYE MALLE- ABLE IRON AND COUPLER COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
YOKE FOR CAR-COUPLINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,444, dated November 26, 1901.
Application filed June 25, 1901. Serial No. 65,975. (No modelJ To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, JAMES TIMMS, of Oolu mbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Yokes for Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings, and more particularly to the yokes by means of which the draw-bar is connected through the medium of the buffingsprings with the draftirons or timbers, the object of the invention being to so construct a yoke for the purpose stated that the bolts which connect the parts thereof together and to the draw-bar will be relieved of lateral strain, and thus reduce the liability of the shearing of the end bolts to a minimum.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved yoke. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a face view of one of the spacingblocks. Figs. 5 and 6 are edge and plan views, respectively, of said spacing-block.
1 1 represent two parallel plates, constituting the top and bottom, respectively, of the yoke, and these plates are properly separated for the accommodation of the buffing-springs between them in a manner which is well understood, said plates being thus spaced apart by means of blocks 3, two or more of which maybe employed. When two spacing-blocks are used, one of them will be placed at or near the center of the yoke and the other in proximity of the rear end thereof, the rear extremities of the plates 1 1 being bent at right angles to form flanges or shoulders at to bear against the end spacing-block, and thus assist in relieving from lateral strain the bolt which secures said block to the plates 1 1.
Each spacing-block is preferably made of sufficient width to extend from one edge to the other of the plates, being thus disposed transversely within the yoke and extending from side to side thereof. The spacingblocks are provided centrally with holes 5, extending vertically through them for the passage of bolts 6 which project at their respective ends through the respective plates 1 1 for securing the plates and spacing-blocks together. Each block is also provided at each end with lugs 6 6, disposed at respective sides of the hole 5. These lugs enter sockets 7 7 in the respective plates at respective sides of the bolts 6 and relieve the bolts from lateral strain, which would tend to shear them.
The inner face of each plate 1 is provided near its forward end with circular enlargements 8, each having its peripheral Wall at right angles to the faces of the plates. The plates 1 and enlargements 8 are perforated for the passage of a bolt 9 for connecting the yoke with a draw-bar 10. The draw-bar 16 is provided in its upper and lower faces with sockets 11, identical in shape to the circular enlargements 8, and into these. sockets said circular enlargements project and serve to pivotally connect the draw-bar to the yoke and at the same time act to relieve the bolt 9 of lateral strain, so as to prevent liability of the latter being broken by shearing action between the draw-bar and yoke.
My improvements are simple in construction, can be'easily and quickly assembled, and readily repaired at a small cost.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 0 Patent, is-- l. A yoke for car-couplings, comprising two plates, blocks separating said plates, bolts passing through the plates and blocks, and lugs projecting from the respective ends of the blocks and entering sockets in the plates at respective sides of the bolts.
2. A yoke for car -couplings, comprising two plates, blocks separating said plates, bolts passing through said plates and blocks, lugs 10o projecting from the ends of the blocks and entering the plates at respective sides of the bolts and aflang'e or shoulder at the rear end gether at points between the lugs on the of each plate and bearing against the rear blocks. face of one of said blocks. Intestimony whereof I have signed this 3. A yoke for ear-couplings, comprising specification in the presence of two subscrib- 5 two plates, a circular enlargement on the ining Witnesses.
