CEILING STRUCTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,922, dated February 26, 1901.
Application filed November 28, 1900. Serial No. 37,982. (No model.)
T0 in whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BALTHASAR MAIBAcH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ceiling Structure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in fireproof-ceiling structures; and the object is to provide a ceiling of this character that shall be comparatively light, yet strong, and easily placed in position.
I will describe a ceiling structure embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of a ceiling structure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the girders. Fig. 3 is a side view or" one member of a girder. Fig. 4 is a side View of another member of a girder. Fig. 5 shows a form of girder-tie employed. Fig. 6 is a detail showing the attachment of plastersupporting network to the girder, and Fig. 7 shows a portion of one of the network-rods.
Each girder comprises opposite side members A and B. Each side member consists of a lower straight bar-like section 1, designed to have its ends engaged in the opposite walls of a building, and to firmly tie the said ends they are turned upward, as indicated at 2. Connecting with the section 1 of each side member is a top section 3, of bar iron or steel, having a length equal to the section 1 and designed to engage its ends in the opposite walls of the building, the said ends being turned downward to form ties. At its central portion the section 8 is arched downward, as at 4, and the ends of this arched portion are inclined downward and toward the center, as at 5.
Arranged within the arch and having its upper portion in line with the upper portion of the member 3 is a center brace 6, having its ends turned downward and inward and connected to the ends 5 by ties 7. It will be seen that the arched portion of one member of the opposite member 3, and the center braces 6 are also of different lengths. This serves to break the joints and materially strengthens the structure.
Tiewires 8 engage at one end with an upper member 3 at one side and then with the lower member 1 at the same side, and from this lower member the tie-wire extends upward and connects with the upper member at the opposite side, these tie-rods alternating, so that the opposite members are rigidly braced.
A plaster-supporting network is attached to the several girders. This network consists of parallel rods or bars 9 and parallel cross rods or bars 10, the said bars being tied together at the joints or connections by wires, as at 12. The ends of the main rods or wires 9 are curved to form hook portions 11, which pass over the upper surfaces of the lower members 1 of the girders, the said hook portion having a down wardly-turned end and a down wardlyturned shoulder for engaging, respectively, with the outer edges of'said lower members, and these hook portions are tied to the girder members by wires 13.
After placing the girder members in position a filling of cement or similar material is placed therein, and when hardened a very strong and substantial girder is provided. As each girder consists of several sections it is obvious that the several sections may be placed in position with but slight effort, and when so placed they are to be tied together, as described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a ceiling structure, a girder comprising opposite members of metal, each member consisting of a lower straight bar-like section, an uppersection having a downwardly-arched intermediate portion,a brace member secured in said arched portion, and tie-rods connecting the opposite members, substantially as specified.
2. In a ceiling structure, a girder comprising opposite members, each member consisting of a lower bar-like section, an upper barlike section having a do wnwardly-arched portion between its ends, braces secured in said arched portions, the opposite braces being of difierent lengths, and means for tying the sections and members together, substantially as specified.
3. In a ceiling structure, a girder comprising opposite members, each member consisting of a lower bar-like section, an upper barlike section having adoWnwardly-arched central portion, the end portions of the arches being inclined downward and toward the center, and brace-bars having their ends inclined downward and toward the center and secured to said ends of the arches, substantially as specified.
4. A ceiling structure, comprising opposite sections, each section consisting of a, lower bar-like portion, an upper bar-like portiom and a central brace portion, and tying devices connecting with the upper member of two sections and With the lower member of one of the sections, substantially as specified.
5. In a ceiling structure, a girder substantially as described, and a plaster-supporting netting, comprising bars or rods having hook end portions for engaging over members of the girder, the said hook portions having downwardly-turned ends and downwardlyturned shoulders to engage respectively with the outer edges of the opposite girder members, and means for securing said book ends to the members of the girder.
