UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR A. MOALLISTER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JOHN W. GILROY, OF SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR DESCRIBING PIPING SYSTEMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 646,449, dated April 3, 1900.
.- Application filed December 23,1899. Serial No. 741,383. (No model.)
To all whom it may cancer/c.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR A. MOALLISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Describing Piping Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for describing any desired construction of piping for draining.
The object of the invention is to provide a device for use in describing any desired construction of piping for draining systems; and it consists of a number of detachable sections representing all known pipes, pipe-fittings, and connections which may be connected together to represent any desired construction of piping and then describing by tracing the outline with a pencil or pen, as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be used by any one to describe anydesired construction of piping without regard to whether or not the user is skilled as a draftsman.
In most of the large cities before a system of piping for draining is allowed to be constructed in a dwelling or other building a plan of the proposed construction must be submitted to and accepted by the health commissioner. Therefore plumbers and others employed to construct the desired system of piping for draining, not being skilled as draftsmen, are compelled to apply to others to draft the plan to be submitted to the commissioner. By the use of my present invention any one can describe or draft any desired plan of construction without regard to whether or not he be skilled as a draftsman.
Other features of the invention will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a number of detachable sections secured together. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of two of the sections detached.
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line X X of Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawings, a designates a section representing a straight piece of pipe.
I), c, d, e, f, and g designate several detachable sectioris representing some of the wellknown pipes and pipe-fittings.
While I have only shown sections representing some of the well-known styles of pipefittings for the purpose of illustration, it is obvious that all the known styles and constructions may be represented by the several sections. The said sections in the present instance are made of metal and are flat in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 4; but any other suitable metal may be employed. The several sections may be secured together for the purpose of describing any particular construction of piping by any suitable means. In the accompanying drawings I have shown the said sections secured together by having one end dovetailed and the opposite end having a corresponding cut-out, the dovetail of one section fitting within the cut-out of the next adjoining section.
When it is desired to describe any particular construction of piping for draining, the sections are secured together, as above described, to correspond to the particular style of pipe and fitting which is desired to be used in constructing the said system, and then the sections after being connected together are placed upon a suitable sheet of drawing-paper or other material and the outline traced by means of a pencil or pen, thus completing the desired plan in a few minutes.
The-sections may be made any size and to any scale desired. 4
The sections may be made of any desired material, may be secured together by any suitable means, and may be made to represent any construction of pipe or fitting without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. I11 a device for describing any desired construction of piping, a plural number of 5 detachable sections the contour of each being similar to the contour of a projection of pipe or pipe-fitting.
2. In a device for describing any desired construction of piping, a plural number of IO detachable sections the contour of each being similar to the contour of a projection of a pipe or pipe-fitting, provided with means to secure the said sections together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDGAR A. MOALLISTER.
