Description

E. ROGERS.
DRAFTSMANS TRIANGLE.

EDWARD ROGERS WITNES E I INVENTOR.
EDWARD ROGERS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DRAFTSMANS TRIANGLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
' Application filed June 8, 1914. Serial No. 843,697.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Draftsmans Triangle, of which the following is a specification, in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates'to a device for section lining drawings and for dividing a line into a number of parts and for other uses of the draftsman in producing drawings.
The figure is a plan view of the device.
The numeral 1 indicates one of the edges of a common form of transparent or translucent triangle, the side 2 being at right angles to the side 1 and the side 3 being at 45 degrees to the other two sides. Along the sides of the triangle there are two series of parallel lines 4, 6 and 5, 7, which pairs of lines bear a relation to each other and to the series of notches 10 and 11 such that the distance from the line 7 to the line 5 is divided into an integral number of parts of the same size as the distance between the notches 10, and in the same way the distance from the line 6 to the line 4 is divided into an integral number of parts of the same length as the distance between the notches 11, said conditions being indicated at 8 and 9 respectively. The remaining inner edge of the triangle is divided into a series of different sized notches 12. It is, therefore, possible to produce a series of lines distant from each other the distance between the notches 11 by sliding the triangle along the side 3, the distance between the notches 10 by sliding the triangle along the side 1, or if the notches 12 are used a still different division may be made.
In use the pencil or other drawing instrument is placed in any one of the notches and the triangle is moved along a rule or T square in a well known manner. The line is drawn and the pencil is then moved to the next adjacent notch and the operation is repeated as often as desired.
In order to determine exactly where to 7 Copies 0! this patent may boobtalned for five cents each, by addressing the begin drawing the lines at a distance from a given mark, the lines 4 or 5 are used to precisely position the triangle, whereupon the notches are then used in the usual manner.
It will, of course, be evident that the invention is applicable to any other devices and other shaped triangles than the one shown, in which event other combinations of distances may be made.
An advantage of this device lies in the fact that the notches are placed along the lines which occupy space ordinarily wasted,
the outer edge only of the triangle being of general service while the inner edge is seldom used.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows, modifications within the scope of the claims being expressly reserved:
In a ruling device, a member having a straight-edge and an edge at an angle to said straightedge and provided with, a series of equal-sized notches equidistantly spaced along said edge, said member also having a line spaced from said series at a distance equal to an integral number of said notches.
2. A ruling device comprising a draftsmans triangle having three differently notched inner edges, the notches along each edge being equal-sized and equidistantly spaced along said edges, said ruling device also having two lines thereon, one line spaced from one series of notches at a d stance equal to an integral number of said notches and the other line spaced from another of the series of notches at a distance equal to an integral number of the latter notches.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29 day of May A. D. 1914, in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
