UNITED- STATES PATENT i @Enron AMEDEE TREMBLAY, or Anonpin,r OREGON.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,926, datedSeptember 26, 1899. Y
Application led May 10, 1899. Serial'No. 716,242., (No modela) T0. a/ZZ wiz/0772, t may concern:
Be it known that I, AMDE TREMBLAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Arcadia, county of Malheun'Sta'te of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; 'and I do herebydeclarethat thefollowingisafu1l,clear,
and exact description of the invention, such acter which is simple in construction, of few parts, and which is strong and reliable-in operation. v
To these ends the invention consists. in a rail-joint constructed substantially as herein the appended claims. p
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts,Fig ure lis a view in perspective of a rail-joint constructed in accordance with this. invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similaisection on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig.' t is a vievvr in perspective of the end of one of the rails separated from the otherrail. Fig. 5 is a similar In the drawings, A meeting ends of two rails, which may beof the usual or any preferred construction. Y The flange of the rail A is somewhat thickened at its end and is cut away or recessed, formingV the shoulder or stop a and the extension a', while the body and head of the rail are similarly cut away.. forming the vertical iiange Y a2. A groove as is formed in the edges of the cal ange d2.
flange and the under side of the extension a.' of the rail A adjacent to the shoulders a. At the outer end of the extension a.' are secured twostaplcs a4, one on each side of the verti- The flange of the rail A' is also thickened and cut away similarly to the rail A, forming a stop or shoulder?? and an extension b'. The extensions a.' and bv are adapted to overlap, and their ends abut, respectively, against `the shoulders a, and b. The end of the rail A' is centrally slotted, as at b2, to provide a seat for the vertical flange a2 of the rail A. The sides of the extension b' of the rail Bare and A represent the notches h5, which are in alinement with the groove cof the extension ajwhen the said extensions are in their overlapped or operative position. The rear end of the extension o is also provided With recesses b4, which are adapted to receive the staples a4.
A yoke-shaped spring-clip D, having hooks cl at the extremities thereof, is adapted to be seated within the groove a3 ofthe extension a,'the arms d thereof engaging the notches b3 of thc extension b', While the hooksd bear upon the top of the extension o', serving to bind the two rails together, as shown in Fig. 1,.'
provided near the front vend thereof with' The staples a4 are adapted to 'engage the recesses b4 when the extensions a and b' are in their overlappedposition, and a wedge E is 'driven throughthe upper end thereof to tightly secure the parts in position. l
If desired, a pin (not shown) may be driven in the upper portion of the Wedges E back of the staples toprevent the accidental loosening thereof.
-While I have herein shovvn a preferred formv of carrying my invention into effect, yet I do vnot desire to limit myself to suchpreferred details of construction, but claim'the right to use vany and all modications'thereof which will serve to carry into effect the objects to be attained by this invention in so far as such modifications and changes mayjfall within `the spirit and scope' of my said invention.
lrclaim- Y 1. In a rail-joint, the'comhination With a rail having its end'out away forming a vertical ange, a stop at the inner end of said flange, of a rail having its end slotted to receive said vertical flange and a spring-clamp adapted to embrace the meeting ends of said rails for locking the rails together, substantiallyl as described.' Y
2. In a'rail-joint, the combination with a rail having its end cut away forming a vertical and a horizontal iiange, a stop arranged atl the inner end of said iianges, a groove formed in the edges and under side of said horizontal iiange, and a stapleat` the outer end of said horizontal flange, of a rail'having its end vslotted to receive said vertical ange and recessed upon the under surface to re- IOC ceivev the said horizontal flange, notches vformed in the under side of the slotted portion adapted to coincide with the said grooves in the edge of the seid horizontal Hango, re-
eesses formed in said slotted portion adapted to receive the said stap1es,and Wedges adapted to be inserted in the upper ends of said staples, substantially as described.
