FILE-CASE FOR CARDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,601, dated September 26, 1899.
Application led September 20, 1897. Serial No. 652,333. (No model.)
To all wiz/0771, it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRED MACEY and FRANK MACEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File- Cases for Cards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in' file-cases for cards; and its object is to provide the saine with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fullydescribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a plan View of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 the same on the line I 4 of FiO. 9. .v
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents any suitable case, drawer, or box having an opening Bin the front end near the bottom thereof and grooves C C in the sides and parallel with the bottom.
D is a rest across the front of the drawer, inclined toward the front at about thirty degrees from the vertical and provided with an opening D near the bottom.
E is a movable follower having its side adjacent to the rest D oppositely inclined and adjustable in the drawer toward and from the same. Said follower is held in place when adjusted by means of a flexible strip of metal F, extending across the vertical or back side of the same and resting on pins H near its ends and having its ends extended within the grooves C.
G is a cam-lever above the middle of the strip F to engage and depress the same.
N is a detachable casing inclosing and retaining the strip F in place.
I I are parallel bars pivoted at intervals to ihe opposite ends of yokes J, said yokes having depressed central portions and pivotally scoured at the middle to chairs K, said chairs having raised central portions and being secured to the bottom of the case A.
L is a lever extending through the opening B and moving in a suitable slot in a plate O, said plate having a convex surface to conform to the traverse of the lever. Said lever is provided with a diagonal head l) at its inner end, to which the 'bars I I are pivoted at each side of the lever-pivot, which latter is upon a suitable plate K, secured to the bottom of the case. A spring Q slidably engages the inner end of said head and is provided with depressions Q Q," at suitable places to yieldingly hold the bars I closed or open.
IWI represents the series of cards to be filed,
on which may be any desired memorandaor other matter to be preserved. Said cards are provided with notches M in their lower edges, wide4 enough to receive the bars I when said bars are close to each other, and having opposite lateral extensions engaged by the said bars when they are 'separated from each other. By turning the lever L to the right the yokes J turn on their central pivots and the bars I are moved longitudinally and laterally, bringing their adjacent edges in close contact. The cards can then be arranged in series7 with the bars within the notches h By moving the lever L to the left the bars I I will be separated, as shown in the drawings, and will then enter the lateral extensions of said notches. The cards can then run on the bars I I, but cannot be detached therefrom until said bars are moved close together again. The folloWerE maybe adjusted near the cards and secured by depressing the middle of the bar F by the cam G, which raises the ends of said bar against the upper side of the grooves C G. The cards are then placed against said follower in an inclined position and may now be turned in succession over against the rest D and each card examined seratim. card may be removed or replaced or additional cards inserted at any place by closing the bars I I by means of the lever L.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of a case, a series of cards having notches having lateral extensions, centrally-pivoted yokes and a pivoted Any Y IOS lever, and parallel bars pivoted to said vokes and lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a case, a pivoted lever extending through said case andpivoted within the same, centrally-pivoted yokes, a head on said lever, and parallel bars pivoted to the respective sides of said head and yokes, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a case, a lever pivoted in said case ahead on said lever, a spring slidably engaging said head, centrally-pivoted yokes, and parallel bars pivoted to the respective sides of said head and yokes, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a case, chairs secured to 'the bottom of said case and having raised middle portions, vokes centrally pivoted on said chairs and having depressed middle portions, a lever pivoted in said case and extending outside the same, a head on said lever, a spring slidably engaging' said head and having depressions to hold the same, and parallel bars pivotally attached to the respective sides of said yokes and head, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a case having grooves in its sides, parallel rods forsecuring cards in said case, an inclined rest at one end of said case, an inclined adjustable follower, a ilexible bar engaging said grooves and resting on supports near each end, and a cam engaging the middle of said bar whereby said follower is held in place, substantially as described.
6. The combination of a case having grooves in its sides, parallel bars in said case, means for moving said bars toward and from each other, an inclined rest at one end of said case, an adjustable follower having an inclined side, a iexible bar engaging pins in said follower near its ends, and engaging said grooves at its ends, and a cam pivoted on said follower and engaging the middle of said bar, substantially as described.
7. In combination with a case having grooves in its sides an adjustable follower having a cam, a flexible bar engaging said grooves at its ends, pins in said follower engaging said bar near its ends, and a casing inclosing said bar, substantially as described.
S. The combination of a case having grooves in its sides, yokes pivoted at the middle upon chairs secured to the bottom of said case, a lever pivoted to said case and extending outside the same, a head on said lever, parallel bars pivoted to the respective sides of said yokes and head, an inclined rest and an adjustable inclined follower in said case, a flexible bar on said follower engaging said grooves at its ends, pins and a cam on said follower, engaging said bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
