C. F. McBEE. LOOSE LEAF FILE. APPLICATION FILED JULY 9.1913.

CHARLES F. MoBEE, OF ATHENS. OHIO.
LOOSE-LEAF FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. McBnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, county of Athens and State of Ohio,
have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Loose-Leaf Files, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a loose leaf file designed for receiving and retaining, in proper and approved manner, papers to be filed, the covers of the file fitting together in such manner that the posts, constituting the edge thereof are in alinement, each cover being adapted, when the file is open, to form a tray to hold the sheets.
My invention consists of certain details of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my file, partly opened; Fig. 2 shows anotherperspective view of the file in an open position; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one corner of the device; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the clasp; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the latch bar; Fig. 6 is a detail front elevation of the clasp and latch bar, showing the same in their locked position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 10 is used to indicate the lower cover of my device, preferably constructed of a rigid material, and provided with a right angular back 11, the upper cover 12, being hinged thereto, as shown. Obviously the covers are of like size and each cover is provided on its inner surface and near each side thereof with two, or more, posts, 13 and 14 respectively, said posts of the upper cover being spaced a distance greater longitudinally than the posts of the lower cover whereby the mating posts will be substantially although not exactly in alinernent when the covers are closed, as shown. in Fig. 3. By this arrangement the Copies of this patent may be obtained for leaves may be inserted or dropped easily between the posts of the upper cover temporarily. The covers are held together, when in closed position, by the clasp locks as shown, the mating members, 15 and 16, being disposed on the inner surfaces of the upper and lower covers respectively, and near the forward edges thereof. The clasp locks are designed to be of such length as to cause the two covers, when closed, to be held in parallel position. By this construction it is obvious the papers to be filed cannot obstruct the closing of the covers as the posts 13 and 14 are in alinernent. It is equally obvious that when the file is open the top cover may be used as a convenient tray on which to place the files not in use and they need not be disturbed when it is desired to close the file, as the closing there of will cause the files to fall into their proper places.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A loose leaf file comprising a pair of upper and lower covers, said lower cover having a rigid vertical back, to the upper edge of which the upper cover is hinged, clasps carried by the lower cover and adjacent its forward edge, said clasps being arranged in spaced relation, spaced posts carried by the upper and lower covers, said posts being located adjacent the end edges of the respective covers, the posts of the upper cover being spaced :1 distance greater longitudi nally than the posts of the lower cover, whereby the posts of the respective covers will be out of alinement when said covers are confronting, and latch bars carried by the forward edges of the upper cover, for detachably engaging said clasps.
