Be it known that I, JAMES PARIS LEE, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have inventeda new Improvement in Cartridge-Packets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection wit-h the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in cartridge-packets for firearms of the boxmagazine type, in which charges of cartridges are superposed one above the other instead of being arranged in line or end to end, the object being to produce a simple and effective packet constructed with particular reference to feeding the cartridges in right position from the packet.

With these ends in "iew my invention consists in a cartridge-packet having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention as herein shown I employ a packet open at the top, closed at the bottom and at its rear and forward ends, and having its sides cut away so as to virtually form at the forward end of the packet a bullet-hold A and at the rear end of the packet a cartridge-head hold A. XVithin the packet I locate a follower-like carrier 13, provided at its rear end with a T-shaped slightly-concaved enlarged guide 13, which extends rearward into the cartridge-head hold A of the packet, and at its forward end with a guide B which extends forward into the bullet-hold .A of the packet, the said guide 13 being shaped to form two depending equalizing-fingers Z) Z), constructed and arranged to trail over slightly-curved cam-surfaces O 0 formed upon the rear edges of the bullet-hold A of the packet, as well shown in the drawings. The extreme forward end of the guide B consists of an arm 13 the upper end of which is arranged vertically and shaped to form a bullet-rest 13 which is about in the plane of the upper surface of the carrier itself. It will be understood that the arm B ext-ends between and forward of the cam-surfaces O 0, upon which the fingers Z) Z) trail. The said carrier, with its guide B inserted into the cartridge-head hold A of the packet and with its forward guide B entered into the bullet-hold A of the packet, is raised in the packet for lifting the cartridges therein by means of a spring D, which is engaged with its lower face about midway the length thereof, the spring being secured by its forward end to the upper end of the bullet-hold of the packet, as seen in Fig. 4:.

It will be understood that as the carrier is pushed upward by means of the spring its fingers b I) travel over the cam-surfaces G 0, whereby it is maintained in right position throughout the length of its upward excursion, so that as the cartridges are lifted they are brought into right position one by one for being fed out of the open upper end of the packet. Furthermore, if the rear end of the carrier is pressed down either directly or through the medium of cartridges'resting upon it, its downward movement will be blocked by the cramping of its fingers I) Z) upon the cam-surfaces O C. On the other hand, if the forward end of the carrier is pressed downward either directly or through the medium of interposed cartridges the said fingers will not be clamped, but permit the downward movement of the carrier.

It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes from the construction herein shown and described may be made, and I would therefore haveit understood that I do not limit myself to such construction, but hold myself at liberty to make such alterations therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

I am aware, however, that it is old to provide a cartridge-packet with cam-surfaces for the equalizing of the upward movement of a spring-lifted carrier formed with fingers which coact with the said surfaces as the carrier is lifted by the spring. I am also aware that it is old to form a cartridge-packet with a bullet-hold at its forward end and a'headhold at its rear end and so as to be open or partially open between the rear edges of the bullet-hold and the forward edges of the head-hold. I do not therefore claim either of these constructions broadly.

I am further aware that it is old to form the forward end of aspring-lifted carrier with a bullet-rest and do not claim such a construction broadly.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a skeleton cartridgepacket formed at its rear end with a cartridgehead hold, and at its forward end with a cartridge-bnllet hold the rear edges of which are formed with long cam-surfaces, of a carrier located within the said packet, and provided at its rear end with a T-shaped guide which extends into the said cartridge-head hold, and at its forward end with a guide which extends forward into the cartridge-bullet hold specification in the presence of two subscrib- I ing witnesses.
