- TOY SPRING eUN.
No. 437,605. Y Patented Sept. 30, 1890.
@VMM/eamo. Y 5M/nemo@ ZJ 33M 9W, Wigwam MM5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IV. KELLEY, OF GOSHEN, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR CHARLES C. LATTA AND GEORGE L. LAMB, BOTI-I OF SAME PLACE.`
roY SPRING-GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 437,605, dated September S, 1890.
Application ilerl September 30, 1889. Renewed August 2, 1890. Serial No. 360,748. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Rubber Guns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1o it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, .which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention and is a vert-ical section. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a front view.
Fig. 4 is a detail and a perspective View.
'lhisinvention has relation to toy guns and it consists in the novel construction and comzo binations of parts, as hereinafter described,
and pointed out in the claim.
" In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the stock of a toy gun, and B the barrel or. support thereof. The stock A is 2 5 slotted centrally and vertically at b to receive a trigger C, pivoted thereon and provided with a vertical shouldered head d above the -Stock and a curved forward and downward process or lug e, which engages the surface of 3o a horizontal spring Z, secured over the slot beneath the stock A. This spring is provided with a longitudinal slot f, through which the lower part of the trigger projects, and it serves to hold the trigger-head d to its engagement with the slot fr of the release-plate when the gun is set. c
The release-plate A consists of a horizontal base V, having a longitudinal rear slot'r, a forward vertical forked projection or holder 4o h ata right angle thereto, and it is hung by lateral journals it' in lateral opposite vertical lug-bearings K K of a horizontal plate L, secured to the gunstock in the same plane as the release-plate.
D indicates an elasticband, secured at its free ends d', respectively, between opposite' forked holders g, projecting vertically from a transverse metallic plate F, secured near the upper end of the barrel or support B. Both forked holders are similar; but theinner prong 5o s of each fork is of less diameter than its fellow to allow it to be forced against its end of the elastic band to hold the latter in close relation between the prongs of the holders.
When the gun is to be set, the release-plate is in engagement, by means of its slot r, with the shouldered trigger-head. The missile is now held within the loop of the elastic band D with the fingers, and said band is drawn back beyond the forks of the release-plate 6o and the sides of the band pressed together to enter between said forks. A pocket is thus formed back of the forks containing the missile, (which is usually a beam) and the latter prevents the return of the band, holding it to vits engagement between the forks until released by the disengagement of the releaseplate from the trigger when the latter is actuated. When this occurs, the release-plate turns suddenly forward upon its bearings and 7o the missile is discharged by the sudden contraction of the elastic band.
I may sometimes re-enforce the inside of the back of the loop'to prevent wear, orI may provide that part with a leather wear-piece secured to the elastic band.
What I claim isd In a toy gun, the combination, with a springtrigger, of a slotted pivoted release-plate having a forked holder to retain the elastic and 8o missile between and back of the said holder, and the gunstock having the forward transverse plate provided with opposite lateral prongs for holding betweenthem by pressure the free ends of an elastic band, substantially 8 5 as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
GEORGE WV. KELLEY.
