'ro ALL WrioM IT MAYv coNoERN:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. CROSS, of Lime Rock,in the county of Litchfield, in the State of Connecticut,'have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bed-Bottoms and Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following' i's a-full and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to springs and their connections, by which the slats which 'support the bed or cushion, are connected to the bedstead or equivalent support. y v
I will first describe what I consider the best means of carrying out my invention as applied to a bedstead.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Figure 2 is a p lau view. I
' .Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the spring and adjacent parts when loaded.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the gures. L
The'drawings represent'the novel parts, with so much of the other parts asis necessary to show their rela' tion thereto.
A is the bedstead, which may be made 1n any of the approved forms, either highly ornamented or extremely plain, as represented. a a are hook-formed bracl'iets bolted upon the inside .of the bedstead. B B B lare parallel slats-to which are secured hook-formed brackets, b, by means oi' stout rivets as represented. C and I) are castings, having bolts or axes c and d passing through them as represented, and having ears or spurs C D arranged as represented. These castings, C and D, are connected to the hook-like'brackets a b, so as to turn thereon in vertical planesas indicated in the drawings. E E, tc., are spiral springs of stout brass wire'or other suitable material, 'applied'upon the castings C and D, so as to take hold of the spurs C andD in the manner represented. When the weight of one or more persons is applied upon the slats B, orpwlien at any subsequentperiod the load thereon is changed or moved, the castings C and D tiirn on their respective axes c andai so as to assume various inclinations in the vertical plane; while the spring E. stretches and contracts according, to the well-known laws of` springs of this character. The whole constitutes an easy and eii'ective support for the slats, allowing -great freedom of motion and great elasticity in the support. My construction also allows oi' being adjusted with very great nicety to diiferent loads and to compensate for different strengths of spngs and for inequalities in the proportion of the parts. If the spring is found to be too long, 'it is suliicient to turn one of the castings C or I) halt` roundinthe one direction or theother, so as to slide corresponding projections C vor Dv along in the helical space between the several coils of the springE. If 'it is turned half around in one and all yvarieties of seats, aswell as to beds.
direction, it shortens the spring and incr-eases itsY tension; if itis turned half around in the opposite direction, the act lengthens'the spring and diminishes the tension. The casting C or D may be turned many times around if necessaryin order to eiect the proper' adjustment. All the parts of my invention may be made by machinery with great facility and economy, andthe work'may be put together with great 'delicacy by very ordinary Werlimerr. It will be obvious that the same construction and arrangement may be applied to chairs, benches, sofas,
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new in bed-bottoms and seats, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows: l
1. I elaim the spiral spring E, attached to the end of the slat B, or of the bedstead A, by means of an attachment inserted into the end of the spring, and having one or more spurs standing in the helical spaces' in the spring so as to allow of being turned, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. I claim, in combination with the above, the within-described arrangement of the castings C and D, and axes c and Lad-interi to turn in the vertical plane, substantially as and 'for the purpose herein spccihed.
' snwAnis onces.
Witnesses:
