Description

@with ,tatto gaten-t @fitta IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
SPusic::rie-ICATroial TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, RILEY JAMES GILBERT, of Hanover, Rock county, State of Wisconsin, have invented a.
new and improved Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulhand exact description thereof,` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichi i Figure 1 isa view in perspective of my gate.
Figure 2 is anend view, showing how the inclined carrying-beams are operated. i
V Figure 3 is a front or side view, with parts removed to show how the inclined carrying-beams are connected and supported. i i
Figure 4 is a cross-section of carrying beam' B, at the point of support to the heel post a, showing howi the latter is `connected to and supported by the former. 4
Figure 5 is across-section of lcarrying-beam C, at the point of support to the head post b, showing how the latter is connectedfto-and-supported by the former; .and
Figure 6 .is similar lto iig; 4, with the addition tothe beam of a side cap or weather strip, r.
The nature oi"` my invention'relates `to that class of fence or farmgates'called gravitating gates, and consists in supporting a gate on wheels on two carrying-beams, so connected` to each other and to a central post that, raising or depressing the end of one, both beams are inclined in either direction, thereby causing the gate to gravitate to an open or closed position at pleasure, and in deiiectingv or turning up the outer end of one or both carrying beams, so 'as to aid in thestarting and stopping of the gate,
To enable others'skilled in the artto make and use my invention, I willproceed `to describe its construction i and operation.-
I construct Vtheigate, A', of any desired form, providing it withheel and head posts, a and b, to which are attached by straps,`c, or otherwise, the` wheels or pulleys, d, that run oni-.the rails; e-'e, of the carrying-beaniis,l`
B and C.4 VThese beams `are connected by thebar D, and` are attached to the post. E,`at t' and S, figs. 'liand 3, in such a manner as toallow their outer ends to move freely. upand down. To protect the wheels, d, and rails,
e, from the rain and'snow, I cover the beams with a cap, gr, that' m`a.y also entend down in the form of aside cap, r, for the same purpose. The outer ends of thecarrying-beams arelgu'orded and keptinposition` by being made to'play in'mortises in or through the posts, F and R. To steady 15h-agate, I employvthe side rolls, u, and vl To` support and strengthen the posts, E and F, I usually join their .tops by: acap, IzI.` The postF has also a crossbeam, I, from which depend the swinging fulcra, M, of thefV levers, ILL, thatfare attached tothe outer. end of the carrying-beam, B, and have depending handles, N'N, with which the gate-:may` be opened or closed.
'.Iooperate this gate it is only necessary to pull down cr-push up either ofthe `handles N N, thereby raising or depressing the outer 'ends of the carrying beams and causing themto present an :incline either to the right or left-hand direction,i down which runs the gate to an open or :closed-position., y'Il o aid-in startingthe "gate, by causing the yca'rrying-wheels to reston a steeper incline', I'dei'lector turn'up the,- outer ends of `the carrying-` beams, as shown by C, igs. 1 .and 3, This construction also tends to retardthe velocity ,of the gate, or stop it,`
during the last part of its movement. It will be seen that this gate may be used `as a double gate, thatis, two
gates opening in opposite directions may be used together. In that case everything is doubled except the post,`
F (which is dispensed with) and the handles, levers, and fulera, N, L, ,and M and .the-outer ends ofthe carrying-beams, B, 'of the two gates are joined, `so as to allow both gates tobe operated by the same levers, `L.
What I claim' as new, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is
1. The carrying-beams B and C, when constructed, arranged, and `used with or without the side cap, r, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l
2. The combination and arrangement of the handles N, levers L, swinging fulci'a M, carrying-beams B and C, connecting bar D, gate A, posts F E It, and cross-beam I, substantially as and for the` purpose set forth.`
