TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. BRYAN, of LebanoinBoone county, and Stilte of India-na, have invented a. new and useful Gate Latch called Excelsior; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

'Ihe nature of myinvention consists in constructing a latch made of iron or metal.A It is two by four inches. The short end, 2, is made with an inclined plane in front; the other part7 1, acts ns n. lever, and rests in staple 4. The latch is hinged on its bend and Works freely. 3 is a staple tor the catch part of the latch to work in; 5 is the catch with the inclined 6 fastened to it and screwed to the post 7.

When I wantto pass the gate I raise the lever part l of the latch, and thereby draw the short or catch part 2 out, relieving it from thc catch 5. And when the gate shuts, the catch part 2 of the lever strikes against the inclined 6 in the catch 5, and passes down on that incline until it falls into the catch 5. In this manner I close the gute. i

What I claim my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

The latch 1 and 2, and the connection of this latch 1 and 2 with the catch 5 and inclined 6, all operating and arranged as described and for the purpose Set forth.
