SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,320, dated March 8, 1898.

Application filed June 26, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDWARD PUGSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a hat-fastener of the class employed for securing ladies hats in place while in use 5 and the object is to provide a simple, convenient, and efiective device for this purpose.

To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hat-fastener. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of a hat, showing the fastener secured in place. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the fastening-pin. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the retaining-plate.

1 represents a sheet-metal plate, the parallel edges of which are provided with integral longitudinal flanges 2 2, which encompass the contiguous parallel edges of the guide-plate 3.

4 1 represent transverse orifices extending through the guide-plate and. base-plate for conveniently securing the same to the hat.

5 represents a semicylindrical socket provided at one end with a tongue 6, by means of which it is hinged on the transverse rod 7, secured to the integral ears 8 8 of the baseplate 1. This socket forms a guide for the hat-pin 9, the shank of which is adapted to slide freely through said socket, and the outer end of said pin is formed with a hollow conical handle 10, which communicates with a longitudinal groove 11 formed in and extending the entire length of the pin proper.

Serial No. 642,520. (No model-l and its opposite end, after extending through the groove in the pin, is then passed through the guide-groove 14 in the guide-plate 3 and itsimmediate end secured by a knot 15 in the enlarged end 16 of said guide-groove.

The tension of the elastic cord is such as to normally hold the handle 10 against the outer end of the socket; but at the same time the handle may be withdrawn, so as to slide the pin through the socket and permit its point to be inserted in the hair on the head, and when the handle is released the elastic cord will return the pin to its normal position and hold it in engagement with the hair against accidental displacement.

. It will be noticed that when the pin is Withdrawn the elastic cord lies snugly in the longitudinal groove in the pin, which forms at once a guide and a guard for the cord and prevents its derangement when in operation.

Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention Without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

1. The hereindescribed hat fastener or holder, comprising the base-plate 1, the guideplate 3, secured thereto between the parallel flanges of said base-plate, and the socket 5 hinged to said base-plate 1, in combination with the hat-pin 9 formed with a longitudinal groove 11, and the hollow conical handle 10, adapted to engage said socket, and the elastic cord 12 having one end secured in said hollow handle, and its opposite end fixed in the guideplate 3, substantially as shown and described.

2. The herein-described hat-fastener comprising the base-plate 1, provided with longi tudinal flanges 2 2, the guide-plate 3, formed with the longitudinal groove 14, and secured to said base-plate 1 by means of said flanges, and the socket 5, transversely hinged to one end of said base-plate, in combination with the pin 9 having a longitudinal movement in said socket, and provided with the longitudi- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
