Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
G-INRIOHARA', OF SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA. I
CIGARETTE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,471, dated October 12, 189
Application filed September 24,1896. Serial rt. 606,876. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GINRIO HARA, a citizen of Japan, residing at San Mateo, in the county of San Mateo and State of California, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cigarette or cigar holders; and its prime object is to produce a simple, light, compact, inexpensive, and comparatively durable holder which shall be capable of assuming a very compact form as well as a limited extended condition.
A consequent but by no means a minor advantage of my invention lies in the fact that the holder can be adjusted to fit almost any size of cigar or cigarette, and, further, the absorbent natureof the material composing the device makes it possible to segregate all deleterious matter apt to be found in the smoke of cigarettes'especially.
In carrying out my. invention I have provided a simple device for limiting the degree of extension of the holder, and in so doing have greatly added to its durability.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim;
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar let-' ters of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in an extended condition. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the holder closed into a compact form. Fig. 3 represents a sheet of paper out of which are punched or cut a series of strips adapted to form the holder. Fig. 4 represents thestrip of paper with thread attached before being formed into a holder.
Referring now to the above drawings by letter, A represents a strip of paper or any other substance of an absorbent nature. Near one extremity of this strip A is a projection B, which is formed integral with the strip. In stamping or cutting out this strip A an indentation C is left to form the projection B on the adjacent strip A, as shown in Fig. 3.
The next step in the construction of my inventionis to roll the strip A into the form shown in Fig. 2 by starting at the extremity (t and rolling toward 1). One extremity of a light strong thread D having been previously attached to the projection B by means of some adhesive substance, the remaining free extremity of the thread is attached to the under side of the strip A at the extremity b and the latter cemented to the body of the compact holder, as shown in Fig. 2. The dotted lines in Fig. 4 represent theposition where the thread D is laterally attached.
' From Figs. 1 and 2 it will be readily seen that by grasping the projection Bthe holder can be quickly extended into a convoluted form.. The function of the thread D is also quite manifest, as it limits the degree of extension of the holder and prevents the destruction of its component coils.
If .it is desired to close the holder, the device is held between the forefinger and thumb, and by gentle pressure the coils enter the base.
The holder can be made and sold independent of a manufactured cigar or cigarette and subsequently placed over them, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, or the cigarette can be secured to the outer surface of the compact holder during the process of manufacture of the former, and in this case the cigarette will assume the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 2.
' The construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention being thus made known, the advantages of the same will, it is thought, be readily understood.
I'am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts of the devices herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve'the right, to
Having thus fully described my invention, ment of the component coils of said holder what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters relative to each other. Patent, is In testimony whereof I aflix my signature A holder for cigars or cigarettes consisting in presence of two witnesses. 5 of a strip of paper or other flexible substance GINRIO IIARA.
rolled into a convoluted form, a projection \Vitnesses: formed near the inner extremity of said strip P. O. RODGERS, and means for limiting the degree of adjust- F. T. BARTLETT.
