Beit known that I, JOHN J. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dolores, in the county of Montezuma and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This .invention relates to sash-locks; and it consists, essentially, of a track of specific form inserted in the side sill of the sash and having coacting therewith a movable roller, the said track having a V-groove and serrations of teeth thereon and a roller correspondingly notched or toothed.
The invention further consists of the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to` provide a sash-lock that may be readily released in raising or lowering the sash, but forms a secure means of sustaining the sash at a proper elevation and dispenses with sash weights and cords, the parts being simple and eective in their construction and arrangement, strong and durable, easily and readily operated, and comparatively cheap in the cost of manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of a window frame and sash, showing the inven# tion applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on the line x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of parts of the device. Fig. 4 is a section on the line a: x of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate the corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1 designates a windowframe, and 2 a sash, both devices being of ordinary form of construction, and set in the window-frame is a casingS, which is held in after the manner of an ordinary mortise-lock and has .an outer base-plate for the slot 5 arranged vertically therein. The said casing 3 has a recess 6 formed therein, in which is located a follower 7, having a pin or rod 8 attached to the rear thereof and movable through an opening in the casing and a portion of the window-frame, and between the rear part of the said follower and the adjacent wall of the recess 6 a coil-spring 9 surrounds the side and normally impels the follower outwardly through the casing toward the face-plate 4. rllhe outer portion of the follower 7 is formed with a curved recess 10, having a V-shaped groove 11 in the wall thereof, and movably engaged by the said recess and groove is a roller 12, having stub-shafts 13 projecting therefrom, movably mounted in slots 14 in the opposite sides of the casing. The periphery of the roller 12 is beveled in opposite directions to a central point, as at 15, and in the latter and circumferentially extending around the said roller are a series of notches or teeth 16. The said roller 12 is normally impelled through the slot 5 of the face-plate 4, but is freely movable into the casing 3 against the repellent action of the spring 9.
The side stile of the window-sash at the outer edge thereof has a track 17 embedded therein, so that the outer portion of said track will lie flush with the adjacent surface vof the said side staff. The said track 17 is formed with a V-groove 18, and at the angle thereof teeth or notches 19 are constructed and adapted to be engaged by the notches or teeth 16 of the roller 12. The said track 17 extends throughout the vertical length of the sash, and the devices are adapted to be used in connection with either or both the upper or lower sash, and, if desired, might be placed on both sides of the same. It is believed to be sufficient, however,that the devices vbe positionedin connection with one side only.
When the parts of the sash lock or fastener are duly removed, the periphery of the roller 12 ts into the groove 18 of the track 17, the
slope or bevel of the said roller extending tov the angular arrangement of the said groove. When the lower sash is raised or the upper sash lowered, or in reverse movements of said sash, the roller 12 moves in the groove of the track 17 and the notches or teeth 16 of said roller dig into the teeth or notches 19 of the track. Then the lower sash is lifted or the upper sash lowered, the pressure brought to bear upon the roller l2 is sufficient to set up a frictional contact between said roller and the track, which will be strong enough to stand either sash in its adjusted position but the said contact between the parts can be readily overcome by moving the sash as may be desired.
The mechanism set forth might be applied to other devices, and it will be observed that when the several parts are mounted they are entirely hid and form no disgurement which is exposed exteriorly. In view of the strength of the several parts breakage is not liable to occur, and, furthermore, the simplicity of positioning the casing carrying the roller and also of the track within is a device exceptionally convenient.
It is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the details of construction, proportion, and dimension might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The combination of a Window-frame havin g a casing therein with a recess and slots in the opposite sides thereof, a roller having stubshafts mounted in the said slots and formed with a beveled periphery having notches or teeth at the apex, a spring-actuated follower having a curved recess provided with a V- shaped groove in the wall thereof to receive the beveled portion of the said roller, and also provided with a pin o1' rod that extends through an opening in the casing, and a sash having a track mounted thereon provided with a V-shaped groove in the outer edge at the center of which teeth are formed, the said groove corresponding in pitch to the beveled periphery of the roller, substantially as described.
