SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming pari: of Letters Patent No. 357,578, dated February 15, 1887.
' Application filed 'June 17, 1886. Serial No. 205,451. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALVIN TAYLOR CHURCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, `in the county lof Van Buren and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention', such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadV to the accompanying drawings, which forin part of this specification.
My invention relates to thatclass of side attachments for windows for the purpose of holding the sash, and has for its object a deviceso constructed that by means of a lever-arm a beveled shafthead can be turned against a beveled lug on an angle-piece in a socket of a window-sash stile to hold a roller therein against the casing of the window, thereby locking the sash at any desired point; and it consists in the construction hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents my invention applied to a window-sash in a casing ready for use, the sash being broken away to show the device. Fig. 2 is aplan View of the angle-piece holding the roller in the 0, is made by cutting an inwardlybeveled opening from the outer side of the stilein shape adapted to hold my fastening device.
At or near the upper and outer edge of the socket there is hinged or pivoted an anglepiece, D, that rests within the socket, so that its angle-arm d on itsdower end can pass into the socket a sufficient distance to be within the outer edge of the sasl1stile C.
On the inner side of the main arm d ofthe angle-piece, and at or near the anglearm d, there is a beveled lug, a, extending a part of the way up the main arm as it lies in the socket, for the beveled head of a lever-shaft to Work against to prevent its frictional contact with the main arm.
In the bottom of the socket a recess, E, is made, from which ahole, e, isextcnded through the sash-stile. Within this hole and recess a shaft, F, having a hinged lever-arm, G, is inserted through the socket froml the outer side of the sash-stile. On the outer end of the shaft there is a head, f, having a beveled end, which is made to bear against the beveled lng a on the inner side of theinain arm d of the anglepiece, and on the inner side of the head there is placedawasher, b, adapted to iit in the bottom of the socket c, for the head of the shaft to rest upon when it is turned; Between the washer and lever-arm a coiled spring, H, is placed on the shaft, which lits into the recess E in the bottoni of the socket and bears against the washer to hold the beveled head f of the shaft'against the beveled lug on the angle-piece.
The angle-piece D is constructed to hold a roller, I, at its lower end on its angle-arm d, which is gradually pressed against the casing bythe action of a coiled spring, H, to holdtlie sash in position.
In operation, as the window-sash is raised, the roller turns on the arm d of' the anglepiece by its gentle frictional contact with the casing A, and when at its desired height, and the movement of the sash is reversed, the roller at once rides up on the inclined main arm d of the angle-piece, and so binds against the casing and the angle-piece asto prevent a further descent of the sash.. Vhen it is desired to lower the sash, it is slightly raised and the lever-arm Gis grasped with one hand and the 'shaft slightly withdrawn to overcome the action ofthe spring H, and held in that position when the roller falls down upon the angle-arm d, and the sash slides down in the' casing without resistance.
The device forms a cam-lever lock for window-sash, and is adapted to fasten them at any desired point.
The beveled head f of the shaft being in the socket, with its thin edge extending downward,
IOC
with the lug` a on the lower portion of the angie-piece resting on and being of the same inclination as the head in this position, the le` ver-arm G is given a partial turn, bringing one edge of the middle or thickened part of the beveled head at the lowest point of the head in place of the thin edge, thereby crowding the angle-piece outward and pressing the roller I against the easingA, locking the sash in position. Vheu there is suficient space between the window stile and easing, the lever-arn1 is turned upward until it strikes the glass, thereby bringing the thickest part of the beveled head at the lowest point of the head, crowding the angle-pieceoutward still farther, with the saine result as above set forth. By this construction a secure lockis formed, as well as a holder for a sash, which can be loosened from the outside only by breaking the glass.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A combined sash holder and lock, consist-ing of au angle-piece hinged in a socket in a Sashstile and having a free roller thereon, with a camdever at or near the end of the iuner side of the anglepieee opposite the hinged end, adapted to press the roller against the window-easing and look the sash in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a sash-stile having a socket with an angle-piece hinged therein, carrying a free roller and provided with a beveled lug ou its inner side, of a shaft secured in the sashstile on the inside of the anglepieee, having a head with a beveled end adapted to work over thelug to lock the sash in position, as set forth.
3. A saslrstile having a socket with an in elined angle-piece hinged therein carrying a free roller, said anglepiece having ak beveled lug on the inner side of its main arm, and a shaft in the socket passing through the sashstile and provided with a hinged lever-arm on its inner end and a beveled head on its outer end, held against the lug on the angle-piece by a spring and adapted to work over the lug to hold and lock the sash, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my siguaturein presence of two witnesses.
ALVIN TAYLOR CHURCH.
