Description

(No Model.)
E. S. BARROWS.
WIRE STRETGHER.
Patented Oct; 6, 1896;
-To Mr? whom it may concern.-
4 UNITED A STATES ZATENT OFFICE.
ELVIN s. BARROWS, OF CLARENDON, VERMONT.
WIRE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,829, dated October 6, 1896. I
' Application filed July 13,1896. Serial No. 598,990. (No model.)
Be it known that I, ELVIN S. BARROWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarendon, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in wire-stretchers for wire fences, and the ob ject is to produce a cheap, simple, and convenient, as Well as durable, tool of this class for constructing and repairing wire fences.
.To thisend the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly set forth 'in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wire-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the swivel-claw adjusted at 'a right angle to the bar. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the claw, and Fig. 4 is a modification of the manner of securing the claw to the bar.
1 represents a bar or lever pointed at one end 2, and preferably square or rectangular in cross-section up to the handle 3, which is round in cross-section for convenience in handling.
4 represents a knee the base 5 of which is pivotally swiveled to the bar 1 by a bolt 6, the right-angular claw 7 of which extends radially outward at a right angle to the bar.
This claw is formed with a V-shaped slot 8, which bights or clamps the wire and securely holds it while the end of the bar rests against the fence-post to act as a fulcrum when the bar is in use.
As above mentioned, the knee is pivoted or swiveled to the bar by the bolt 6, and consequently it can be turned to draw or stretch the wire in any direction.
The contiguous edges 9 9 of the V-shaped slot 8 are rounded or chamfered, as shown.
In the modification I have shown the clawknee pivoted or swiveled to a short sleeve, which can be readily slipped over an ordinary crow-bar, iron-bar, or even a piece of pipe and secured in place by a thumb-screw.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
r ELVIN S. BARROWS. Witnesses:
