To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. CLAcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marynea-l, in the county of Nolan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vVire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in wire stretchers, and it has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of wire stretching tool that may be used with considerable facility to take up the slack of the line wire at the post and to also tighten any loose wires that may be found.

And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render tlglam more useful and commercially desir- 121 6- With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wire stretching tool in applied position,

Fig. 4 is a section on the line H of Fig. 2, and

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view showing the wire engaging member.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and accompanying drawing by like reference characters.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a preferably metallic bar or lever which is preferably rounded for a major portion of its length at one end to provide a handle 2, said lever being formed at its other end with a laterally extending hook 3 which is preferably curved, as shown, and which is designed to engage the fence post. Preferably, the extremity of the bill of the hook 3 is formed with a sharpened edge, as indicated at l, whereby the hook may be caused to effectively engage the post during the stretching operation.

The lever 1 is provided intermediate of its ends with a wire engaging member 5 that extends in perpendicular relation to the lever and that projects from the same side thereof as the hook 3, said wire engaging member being formed with a bifurcated or notched extremity 6 which is preferably beveled on one side, as indicated at 7 In the preferred construction of the device, the wire engaging member 5 is in the form of a bar which is recessed intermediate of its ends to fit within a corresponding recess formed in the lever 1, the two parts being then welded or riveted together.

The bar which forms the wire engaging member 5 also projects from that side of the lever 1 which is opposite to the notched extremity 6, so as to produce a lug 8, and corresponding lugs 9 and 10 project from the corresponding sides of the lever, in spaced relation to each other and to the lug 8, the lug 10 at the extremity of the lever being practically a rear continuation of the hook 8. All of these lugs are preferably notched or recessed on their opposite side edges, as indicated at 11, so that the wire may be received in said recesses and not be liable to slip off, when the lugs are used for the purpose of tightening loose wire. A plurality of these lugs is provided so that the operator can use the space needed, this manifestly depending upon how loose the wire is.

From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved stretching tool will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, when the wire is to be stretched to the post, the hook 3 is engaged with the post, and the notched extremity 6 engaged with the wire. Then, in an evident manner, by using the engagement of the hook 3 with the post as a fulcrum, the operator may easily stretch the wire and hold it while it is fastened to the post.

While the accompanying drawing illustrates What I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts Without departing- 1.
