Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
HENRY MEYERs, or HYDE PARK, AND A., WERE, or scRANroN, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTRACTING BUNGS FROM BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,4 3 l dated July 17, 1866.
To all 'whom t't may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY MEYERs, of
Hyde Park, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, and A. WEBB, of Scranton, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extracting Bungs; and we do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a sectional front elevation of this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of lthe saine. Figs. 3 and 4 are Inodications thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in providing the bung of a barrel 0r cask with a suitable staple, in combination with a mortise or depression, in such a ina-nner that a nook can be inserted and the bung can be extracted by screw 0r lever power without the necessity of striking' any blows on the barrel.
A represents our bung, which is provided with a depression or inortise, et, and staple b, said staple being secured to the bung by extending its shanks clear through and riveting the same on the inner surface thereof; and in order to retain said staple perfectly secure the inner surface of the bung may be protected by a metal plate, c. The top of the staple is flush with the top 0f the bung, so that it does not interfere with the operation of inserting and fastening said bungs, and the depression a is of such a size and depth that a hook, d, can be inserted under the staple.
This hook may be connected to a screw, e, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or it may be formed at the end of a lever, f, as shown in Figs.3 and 4.
The screw e passes through a yoke, B, and it is provided with a lever-nut, g, so that by placing the yoke B upon the barrel the hook d can be made to catch under the staple b in the bung, and by turning the nut the bung is extracted.
When a lever, f, is used, said lever may be provided with a foot, h, which forms the fulcrum, as shown in Fig. 3. By the use of the lever the bung may be extracted in less time than with the screw; but in some cases the screw may be preferable.
By this arrangement bungs of barrels or casks may be extracted without the least injury to the staves, and much labor and expense in reitting barrels are saved.
What we clairn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. Abung, A, provided with a staple, b, and 'depression d, as a new article of manufacture.
2. The hook d, in combination with a screw Or lever, and with the staple d in the bung A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of our invention signed by us the 19th and 27th days of January, respectively.
HENRY MEYERS. A. WEBB.
