Description

UNITED STATES JOEL P. HAWKS, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED CURRIERS KNIFE.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 51,942, dated January 9, 1866.
scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a curriers knife by attaching the knife and devices holding the same to a stock or handle, of the shape or form hereinafter more particularly described, for the purpose of allowing the workman to finish or whiten the leather upon a level or slightly-inclined table, instead of finishing the same over a beam, as done in the ordinary way.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use.
I construct a stock of wood, A, Fig. 2, and provided with handles A.' A', shown in Figs. 2 and 3. From these handles the main portion of the stock extends or projects forward, and to this prolongation the shanks B B B, Figs. 2 and l, are attached. I construct these Shanks with a shoulder and thread and nut, as seen at C O, Fig. l, by means of which device thejaws G G', Fig. l, are iirmly secured and held. These shanks are made either of malleable or wrought iron, as most convenient.
The devicefor holding the knives D D, Figs.
l, 2, and 3, consists of a jaw constructed with two pieces, of male and female shape, as shown at G G', Fig. 1. The knives D D are held between these jaws by means of the screws and nuts aforesaid, and have a slightly-backward inclination given them by means of this peculiar shape of thejaws. By reason of this peculiarity the operator is enabled to use my invention upon a table, either level or slightly inclined, without the fatigue attendant upon working over the beam.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The above-described curriers knife, consisting of the stock A, constructed with the above-described projection for holding or receiving the shanks B B B, the shanks B B B, provided with screws and nuts for holding or securing in place the jaws G G', combined and operated in the manner and for the purposes specified.
2. The jawsG G', constructed and arranged in the manner described, for the purpose ot' setting the knives at any desired angle with the stock.
3. The shanks B B B, in combination with thejaws G G', and stock A, arranged and operating in the manner and for the purposes above specified.
