KNIFE-SHARPENEE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1215.
Application filed April 9, 1915. Serial No. 20,234.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AnoLrHUs D. GoonwiN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife- Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper--;
provide a knife sharpener of this character having pivotally mounted jaws carrying the said files and adapted also to be adjusted toward and from each other to provide a relative lateral bodily adjustment as well as a pivotal angular adjustment.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and' novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife sharpener constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the manner of connecting the upper portions of the bars of the double jaw.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a base bolted or otherwise secured to a bench 2 or other supporting surface and provided at the front or outer end with a vertical flange 3 from which extends a horizontal bolt 4. The base and the flange may be of any desired con struction and the brace 5 may be employed if desired for supporting the flange 3. Mounted upon the horizontal bolt 4 are relatively adjustable jaws 5 and 6 which are secured in their adjustment by a thumb nut '7. The jaw 5 is a double jaw and is composed of spaced bars which have their lower ends fitted against the side faces of the jaw (3 which consist of a single bar arranged to operate at the interval or space between the bars of the double jaw. The bars have lower enlarged portions 8 forming shoulders and provided with sockets 9 extending inwardly from the shoulder 10 of each enlarged portion and adapted to receive the end of afile.
The enlarged end of the bars of the double jaw are provided with alined perforations 11 and the lower enlarged portion of the bar of the single jaw is provided with a transverse slot 12. The screw passes through the perforations l1 and the slot 12 and the latter permits a relative bodily adjustment in addition to the pivotal adjustment afforded by the bolt 4. lhe jaws 5 and 6 are equipped with files 13 and 14, a pair of files 13 being mounted on the bars of the double jaw and a single file 14 being carried by the single jaw and arranged the reverse of the files of the double jaw. The files 13 have their shanks or tangs 16 arranged in the sockets of the shoulders 10 of their enlarged portions and the file 14 has its shank or tang 17 at the top.
Each of the bars is equipped with a file rest 18 consisting of an L-shaped piece of metal secured at one of its sides or wings to the bar and having its other side or wing extending from the inner face of the bar and provided with a tapering notch 19 which forms a seat for the three cornered file and the latter is retained in its seat by a clamp 20 consisting of a plate secured by a bolt or other suitable fastening device 21 to the bar and provided with a projecting angularly disposed tongue 22 which engages the adjacent end of the file. The clamp is curved transversely to present a concaved inner face to the file for securely holding the same in the rest. The bars of the double aw are connected at their upper portions by a strap or plate'23 which maintains the upper portions of the bars in proper spaced relation. The lower portions of the bars are adapted to clamp the lower portion of the single aw which is securely held in its adjustment. The jaws are adapted to be arranged at different angles or inclinations and in the operation of the device a knife blade 24 is placed between the jaws and is drawn outwardly. .The files are adapted to be changed until their abrading surfaces are worn and and they may then be replaced by new files. WVhile three cornered files are preferable other forms of abrading members may of course be employed.
What is claimed is l. A knife sharpener of the class described including jaws consisting of angularly related bars pivotally connected at one end and provided each adjacent to one of its ends with relatively fixed file receiving means, files extending longitudinally of the said bars and each having one end engaged in said means and clamps mounted on the bars at the other ends thereof for engaging the adjacent ends of the said files.
2. Aknife sharpener of the class described including jaws arranged at an angle Copies of this patent maybe obtained. for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
and consisting of bars or members provided on the jaws and consisting of plates arranged to engage the files for retaining'the same in the seats. V
A. A knife sharpener of the class described including jaws having sockets each adapted to receive one end of a file, file rests provided with flanges having notches forming file receiving seats and clamps consisting of transverselycurved plates secured to the jaws and having projecting tongues arranged to engage the ends of the files,
In testimony whereof I mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
