To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that I, ISAAC D. VAN GORDEE, of Niles, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improved Hat or Bonnet Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. My invention relates to an improved hat or bonnet support, and has for its objects to provide a novel supporting device that is particularly adapted for the reliable and convenient adjustable support of a trimmed hat or bonnet, either' in a shipping box or on a display stand, so as to permit the article of head wear to be safely held in a desired position in a box or on a stand, avoid dislodgment, and be readily removable without injury to the supported article. Y

To these ends, my invention consistsin the construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional side View of a packing box, and a hat supported therein and firmly held in position away from the walls of the box. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the improved hat holder adapted for use in connection with a packing box; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improvement arranged upon a supporting display stand.

The improved hat holder, when designed for the support of trimmed hats or bonnets within a packing box A, that is provided for the inclosure and protection of a completed article of head wear, consists of four wire strands a, that are inserted and secured at their lower ends within the tubular socketpiece b,which piece is projected at a right angle upwardly from the sheet metal base strip c. The strands a, are closely assembled by their fixed location within the socket b, and project upright as a composite standard. At a suitable height, the four strands a are divergently bent in a nearly horizontal plane, producing the pairs of lateral limbs a,`d2. The limbs a are curve-bent oppositely from the point where all the limbs radiate,`thus spreading the free ends of said limbs a proper degree, their terminals being pointed, The

other pair of limbs a2 are in a like manner curve-bent away from each other and have their free end portions bent outwardly and oppositely, their ends being also pointed. The base strip c, is made of a sufficient length to permit it to have a suitable surface contact with the bottom of the packing box A, to which it is secured on the inner surface, preferably by pointing the ends ot' the strip, inserting them through the box material, and thenlap-folding the ends c upon the under side of the box, as shown in Fig. l. The base strips may also be secured to the sides or cover of the box in some cases.

`The article of head wear B, that is to be supported within the box A, is introduced so that the straight pointed ends of the limbs a may be made to slightly penetrate the matetial either at the front or rear, and on the inner side, as indicated in Fig. 1. The limbs a2 that have their pointed ends laterally projected, are now pressed toward each other sufficiently to allow the hat or bonnet to [be properly posed, their release and resumption ot normal condition causing the points on their ends to enter the side walls of the hat B, and sustain it, the engagement of the points on the limbs a,'ct2, with the hat securing the latter upon the holder device so that it will be `maintained in place within the box and be prevented from injurious contact with the sides of the receptacle when the latter is shaken and turned into different positions.

The hat or bonnet that has been placed within a shipping box as described, may be readily removed by pressing the curved limbs a2, toward each other, which will release their points; then the hat by an upward and longitudinal movement away from the limbs a', will be released from the pointed ends of said limbs, and may be removed from the box.

The holder device may be arranged in connection with a supporting stand C, by securing its composite standard a a, in a socket on top of the stand, the latter havinga substantial base for the reliable support of the article of headwear it is to display in a show window or upon a counteras may be desired.

Having thus described 4my invention, I claim as new and Patent- 1. A hat or bonnet holder, comprising a supdesire to secure by Letters roo4 port provided with a socket, and two pairs of horizontally projecting limbs carried by a standard secured in the socket of the support, the members of each pair of limbs being oppositely curved and pointed and the free ends of one pair of limbs being bent outwardly, substantially as described.

2. A hat or bonnet holder, comprising a base constructed to be secured to the bottom of a box and provided with a socket, and two pairs of horizontally projecting and curved limbs carr1ed by a standard secured in the socket of the base, substantially as described.
