D. M. FULLER.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING HEAD GEAR.
No. 404,081. Patented May 28, 1889.
Q MMJLLM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.DRUSILLIA MARION FULLER, OF TERRYVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING HEAD-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,081, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed February 8, 1889. Serial No. 299,192. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DRUSILLIA MARION FULLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Terryville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Head-Gear, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain improvements in clamping devices for holding and supporting hats, bonnets, wigs, and other head-gear, whereby any article of head-gear may be firmly held and supported without danger of crushing or injuring the same, whether such article is placed in a trunk or box and exposed to the dangers of transportation or placed in a show-window or on acounter for exhibition. By its use ladies hats and bonnets, however covered with feathers,
artificial flowers, or other trimmings, can be placed in a compartment of a trunk and clamped by my device, and will remain in position unharmed by any rough handling the trunk may receive.
In order that these improvements may be fully understood, I describe my invention and refer to the accompanying drawings as representing the means of carrying it into effect, though it is obvious that modifications may be made therein to meet special requirements or the nature of any particular case in which it is desired to use the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one construction of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same construction, showing a hat or bonnet clamped by the device. Fig. 3 is a view of the same construction slightly modified to admit a hat with a rim. Fig. at is a view of a similar construction of the device suitable for a hat with any sized rim. Fig. 5 is a viewof a construction of the device specially adapted to be used in conjunction with the cover of a hat-box.
Similar letters in all the figures represent similar parts.
Upon the standard A is a disk, E, or other suitable support for the head gear, above which is the disk or clamp B, which is held by a spring, D, and when the spring is pressed down and held by the clamp C the disk B is pressed against the top of any article of headgear which may be placed upon the disk or support E.
The above description refers to and explains all the accompanying figures.
In Figs. 2 and 3 the construction is such that the wire which forms the spring D is so bent as to form the clamp C and the post F, passing through the standard A, and is provided with a thread, G, and a nut, II. By passing the threaded end of the wire through the bottom of a hat-box in a trunk or through the top of a counter or show-case the standard A is firmly fixed in position by screwing on the nut H. The disks E and B can be made of any suitable shape, and are preferably covered with velvet or other cloth.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 is adapted to a bonnet or hat having a projecting rim or trimming, which can project into the space J.
The constructions shown in Fig. 4 and 5 are adapted to hats having rims of any shape or size.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device for supporting and holding head-gear, the combination of a standard having a disk 011 its top, and a movable disk supported on a spring-arm, and a catch attachable to the spring-arm and arranged to engage with the spring-arm and to hold the two disks together.
2. In a device for supporting and holding headgear, the combination of the standard A, having the disk E on its top, the disk B, supported on the spring-arm D, attached to the standard, and so bent at O as to form a hook and engage that part of the spring-arm which supports the disk B.
3. In a device for supporting and holding head-gear, the combination of the standard A, exterior disk, B, and awire supporting the exterior disk, B, and forming the catch 0 and spring D, and extending through thestandard A and having its projecting end provided with a screw-thread, G, and a nut, H.
.4. In a device for supporting and holding headgear, the combination, with the standard A and interior disk, E, attached thereto, Broome and State of New York, this 6th day of an elastic Wire supporting the movable exof February, A. D. 1889. terior disk, B, and formed with the catch 0, arranged to hold the two disks together, and DRUSILLIA MARION FULLER 5 with the offset at J for the purpose and sub- Witnesses:
stantially in the manner described. J. W. BALLnBD,
Signed at Binghamton, in the county of J ACOB'WISE.
