WASTE-PAPER BASKET.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. WESTON, of Washington city, in the District of Columbla, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Waste-Paper Baskets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in baskets and particularly in waste paper baskets of that class which it is desired to ornament by running ribbons through them as is now commonly practiced and the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective View of the basket and Figs. 2 and 3 are do tail views.

My basket is formed of the upright strips A, the bottom B and the connections more fully described hereinafter. The uprights A are strips of suitable length and formed with alternating twisted portions a and straight portions (1., the latter being arranged in radial planes and being adapted to form seats for the connections. At their lower ends the uprights are bent outward and upward forming scroll like feet A and they are bent outward and into ornamental headings A The connections 0 are arranged in pairs and are so disposed around the basket that they and their fastenings form continuous rings around the basket the upright strips being arranged and secured between each pair of connections by the fastening devices presently described. Usually I provide three of these encircling rings but manifestly the number of the rings may be varied. The connections 0 are each formed of a short strip of metal curved from end to end and bent inward at their ends such inwardly bent portions 0 aiding in the ornamentation of the basket and also serving to render more secure the fastening of the connection to the upright as the bend or inward curve of the end prevents the slipping of the connections out of the fastening which binds them to the uprights.

In applying the connections they are first placed side by side in pairs and united by a clasp D bent around them at their middles securing them in position producing an approximately X shaped figure which when applied to the basket is turned on one side as shown in Fig. 1. The pairs of connections so united are placed between the adjacent uprights and are secured thereto by clasps E each of the clasps E being bent around the connections lapped against the opposite sides of the upright and so serving to secure both the connections to the upright against which they are lapped. By arranging the connections in pairs between the uprights uniting them as shown at their centers, and securing them at their ends to the uprights at points above and below their center joint I secure in each ring of connections a bracing of the uprights firmly apart by means of two rows of contacts or clasps extending entirely around the basket one row above the other as shown. Thg bottom 8 of the basket may be formed of sheet metal or other suitable material and may be wired or otherwise suitably secured in place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An improved basket substantially as described comprising the upright strips and the rows of connections encircling the basket and composed of strips arrangedin pairs between the several uprights the short strips of each pair being secured together and' to the uprights substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.

2. The improved basket herein described composed of the upright strips extended and curved at their ends to form feet and headings, and the plurality of rows of connections extending around the basket said connections being composed of short strips arranged in pairs between the uprights the strips of each pair being clasped together at their middles and lapped near their ends against the upright strips and clasps securing the connections upon the opposite sides of the strips to such strips and to each other substantially 5 as described and for the purposes set forth.
