To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARY E. HOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ladies Hand-Bags, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of bags commonly carried in the hand by ladies while on shopping or other expeditions as a convenient storage-receptacle for small articles.

The primary object of my improvement is to provide a construction of bag, in the class referred to, whereby it shall afiord, in addition to the handkerchief-pocket and general pocket usuallyprovided in such bags, at least one additional compartment adapted to hold,

ably retaining, a book, particularly a memorandum or other book, and preferablyboth.

My further object is to provide the bag with additional pockets or compartments arranged in a manner to render it compact and avoid bulkiness, one such compartment .being especially designed for holding and hiding from view a lunch-box; another being of a secret nature, formed in the aforesaid general compartment with a taut partition resemblinglining; and other collapsible pockets, one, say, for letters, and another for cards being provided in the book-holding compartment.

Referring to the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is aperspective viewof my improved bag showing it open to display the general and secret pockets and also the compartment containing the books and lunch-box. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view like that shown in Fig. 1, but presenting the interior of the bookcompartment, from which the lunch-box is omitted, and the minor pockets on one wall. Fig. 4 is a perspectiveview of the bag, showing it closed or folded and presenting the outside handkerchief-pocket.

While material is not of the essence in my invention I prefer to form the bag throughout of leather.

A. is the base or body of the device, in the form of a rectangular sheet folded-upon itself at its center, as at m, to afford the sides A and A which should be suitably stiffened to give permanent-form to the bag, and from the opposite outer ends of which extend the loop-handles r, r. Aflap A extends from the edge of the side A, to cover the outside collapsible general pocket B, havingea' buckle g at which to fasten the flap by its tongue 19. Inside the pocket B is a diaphragm or partition B preferably of chamois-skin, in imitation of a lining and fastened, to the side A, about its edges, except the upper edge along which, at t, it is provided with an elastic band to maintain that edge taut and cause it to hug the adjacent surface of the side A, thus to tend to secrete the pocket B formed by the lining. In the outer side of the side A is formed the diagonal pocket C, intended as e a handkerchief-pocket; and on the inner surface of the side A I provide the collapsible pockets D and D, intended, respectively, for letters, postal-cards, and the like, and visiting-cards, and tickets.

Between the sides A.and A the fold or hinge ac affords the compartment E, and is preferably Wide enough to adapt the comby, the bag to bulge, a memorandum-book F, a reading-book or novel G, and a flat lunch-box H, the latter to be loosely retained in the compartment; although the Width of the compartment E need not be greater than will so accommodate the memorandum-book. In the fold or hinge a: I provide means for removably retaining in the compartmentthe book or books, and the means illustrated for this purpose comprise an endless elastic band 0, one for each book, both passed through a pair of eyelets n, the members of which are near the opposite ends of the fold 00. Thus the book is heldin the compartmentby causing it to straddle or embrace between its leaves the inner length of an elastic band; while the retaining band obviously permits the book to be readily withdrawn for use.

To fasten the sides A and A together, and thus close the bag, I show an elastic band m fastened at its ends to the side A and adapted to be passed about the side A ,partment to contain, without causing, there- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. In a ladys hand bag, the combination of the sides A and A having the connecting hlnge wand forming a compartment E between them, fastening mcans in said compartment for removably securing a book therein, and a pocket 13 on one of said sides containing a partition-lining 13 forming a secret pocket 13 therein, substantially as described.

2. In a ladys hand-bag, the combination of the sides A and A having the connecting hinge a: and affording a compartment E between them, fastening means in said compartment for removably securing a book therein, andapocket B on one of said sides containing apartition-lining B provided with an elastic band 25 extending along its free edge and forming a secret pocket B therein, substantially as described.

3. In a ladys hand-bag, the combination of the sides A and A having the connecting hinge w and forming a compartment E between them, fastening means in said compartment for removably securing a book therein, an outer pocket B on the side A containing a partition-lining B forming a secret pocket 13' therein, a flap A for the said pockets, and inner pockets D and D on the said side A, substantially as described.

4- A ladys hand-bag comprising, in combination, the sides A and A provided with handles 0" and having the connecting hingem and forming a compartment E between the sides adequately wide to contain books F and G and a lunch-box' H, fastening means in said compartment for removably securing the books therein, an outer collapsible pocket B on the side A containing a partition-lining B forming a secret pocket B therein, a flap A for the said pockets, provided with fastening means, inner collapsible pockets D and D on the said side A, a diagonal outer pocket 0 on the side A and a fastening-strap m for the sides, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
