PATENT OFFICE.
ORVAL R. WOOD, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
CAIRIELYINCJIV CASE Application filed November This invention relates to improvements in carrying cases and has for an object to provide a case having appropriate spaces for the reception of books used in connection one with the other, as for instance, appropriate text books covering different phases of a sin-v gle general subject. Particularly the case is designed for the use of the Bible student, and provides a space for a Bible, some appro priately associated book such as Science and Health, a space for a Quarterly, and a space for the support of note paper. Conveniently located alongside these spaces are other spaces for the reception of a note pad, a pencil, a pocket for change, and conveniently located flaps forming pockets for the reception or tickets or cards which the user may desire to place therein.
A further object is to so construct the case that such associated parts may be extended, means being provided within portions of the case which may be extended from the main body to support portions which are unfolded therefrom, thus forming a substantial surface continuous with the base, so that the entire case may support books and other parts of the outfit before the user.
A further object is to provide flaps from the base of the case which when the case is open and books are open thereupon, the flaps may be buttoned across the opened book, to hold the same in eXtended position or to mark the place of study, and which when the case is folded up with the books therein the flaps may be buttoned around the books to cover the ends thereof, and with the case entirely closed by its base members being folded together may with the base members form a compact secure holder to retain the books and protect them from injury.
Vith these and other objects in view which may become apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts, operation and specific features to be hereinafter enlarged upon and recited in the subjoined claims, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my portfolio, folded and showing appropriate books contained and protected therewithin;
Figure 2 is a detail view in perspective ANI)l PORTFOLIO.

showing the parts of the case opened, a supporting device 'drawn out, parts of the stra-p being broken away for clearness;
Figure 3 isa plan view of the case show ing the extensible parts spread out as for use;
Figure l is a section on the line 4 4;
Figure 5 is a section through the closed case; and
Figures 6 and 7 modified form.
Referring to the drawings my device embraces a base member 5 of Hexible or reenM forced leather or other suitable material; this space may be used to support a papelI when ta king notes. Flexibly connected there to so that the same may be folded at right angles to the member 5 a member which includes a space 7 within which a Bible or other book may be placed. F lexibly con nected with the member 6 is a member 8 carrying fastening devices 9, and having' on its are perspective views of a inner surface u flap or pocket 10. Upon the me nber 6 is mounted a book container 11 for the reception of a book such as Science and Health; flaps 12 being provided for retaining the covers thereof. A flap 14; is provided which with the flap 10 forms securing means within which the covers of the Bible may be inserted. rlhese two books are thereby appropriately associated together side by side, for study. i
Flexibly secured to the base member 5 is a f holder 15 having fiaps 16 within which the covers of a Quarterly may be inserted. The Quarterly holder is foldable so that the same may be closed to close and retain the Quarterly, and being flexibly secured may be folded upon itself within the case to lie upon the base member 5 when not in use. Fasteners 17 are mounted on the free side of the Quarterly holder and are positioned to register with corresponding fasteners 18 upon a slide 19 of meta-l or other material mounted within a slide sheath 2O between the pocket 8 and the member 6. The sheath is sewed to the member 8 or otherwise secured as at 21 and is further sewed with a short line of stitching 22 near the open end thereof so that ears 23 formed integral the slide 19 may be stopped thereby, thus limiting the withdrawal of the slide so that the free side of the Quarterly cover may be buttoned thereupon.
Enclosures for the folded case are provided by flexibly securing the flaps 24 and 25 at either end of the member 5. The member 25 has an extension strap 26 With a fastener 27 adapted to be buttoned over the fastener 28 et the flap 24. These two flaps are adapted to hold open and mark the place of study of the books mounted either in the book holder ll or in the space .7 delined by the book holder ll and the member 8, when the Quarterly holder is itolded down out oi the Way. A 'fastener 29 may be positioned upon the flap 16 oi' the Quarterly holder so that when the same is in use in stndy with the Bible and the Science and lealt-h the tlap 26 may be used to mark the place ot study or hold open the pages ot the appropriate book by buttoning the fastener 2T to the vfastener 29.
ldlexibly connected With the member 5 is a member 30 having on one side thereof a carrying handle 3l and having secured thereto on the inside tace a memorandum or note pad retaining strip 32, a pencil helder 33 and a pocket or purse for change 31t- With a buttoned closure 35. Flexibly connected With the member 30 is a flap memberI 36 having; snap fasteners 37 which when the case is closed may be bi'ittoned upon the cri-operating fasteners 9 on the member 8 and which may when the case is partly open give access to the Bible and Science and Health, the Quarterly being folded do vn upon the base 5 to be buttoned upon the fastener 2S thus 'forming a pocket deiined by the members 24:, 25, 30, and 36. A flap 38 is provided on the inside face of the flap or closure member 3G. /Vhen the case is closed this forms a pocket readily accessible :trom the outside by merely unbuttoning this first closure flap, the balance olthe case and its Contents being` in folded relation.
llil'hile in the foregoing I have described specific embodiments, and have mentioned only certain possible modiiieat-ions, it will be appreciated that in practice l do not limitmyselt to .such specific details as herein set forth, but may resort to any practical modifications talling Within the scope of the claims.
lli/'hat l claim is l. A canyinrg case embodying comparte ments tor a purse, pencil7 and note pad mounted on the inside 'tace and a` carrying handle n'iounted on the outside face ot the top closure; book holder extensible from a side closure and -loldable thereon to lie Within the limits oi" the closure; a book cover mounted on the inside ot the bottom closure, and d-etining a space for a third book; and means eXtensible 'troni a second side closure Yfor the support of the extensible book holder.
2. A portfolio ease con'iprising a base member; a bool; cover mounted thereon; a side member delining 'with the book cover aspace ior a seeoiiid book; an extensible support member .slidably retained upon the side member; .and a second book cover adapted to hold a th' d book, one side extending Jfrom the base member and the other .side unfoldable to lie upon and be supported by the extensible support.
En testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
