' METHOD OF PRODUCING ORNAMENTAL SURFACES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,229, dated January 19, 1892. Application filed AprilZ, 1891. Serial No. 387,439. (ModeL) 1'0 all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JERRY S. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nora Springs, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Producing Ornamental Surfaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved ornamental surface and the method of producing the same.

The object of my invention is to produce upon the surface of card-board and other laminated articles raised ornamental figures, the raised portions giving it the appearance of embossed work or the appearance of having the ornamental article attached to the face of the card.

With this object in view my invention consists in the details of construction and the 1 steps of the method, all of which will bemore fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings forminga part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of a card.

In carrying out my invention I employ a piece of card-board A of suitable thickness, upon which the design may be marked or not. This card is held firmly upon a smooth flat surface with one hand, while a knife held in the other hand is used to produce the ornamentation. This ornamentation is accomplished by I passing the point of the blade transversely through one or more layers of the card until the desired depth is reached, then turning the point and forcing it longitudinally or diagonally the desired distance beneath the layer, and at the same time raising said portion of the layer above the face of the card, producing a raised surface. This step is repeated until the design is finished and the ornamentation completed. Where the design does not require a large am ountof surface to be raised, the blade may be inserted diagonally at first, raising the surface as the blade enters. It

,Will be seen that by this method I can carve the surface of the card, producing naturallike ornamentations of varied designs, such as birds, flowers, water, trees, leaves, boats, letters, and the like.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The herein-described method of ornamenting surfaces, consisting in cutting said surfaces obliquely to form ridges constituting a design and then raising said ridges above the surface, substantially as set forth.

2. As an improved article of manufacture,

the herein-described ornamental card having a smooth face and a design, figures, or lettering produced thereon by oblique incisions made in said smooth face at determinate points, the design produced being elevated above said surface, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
