To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB TRUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castile, in the county of WVyoming and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making Glass Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved method of making glass ornaments.

For a full description of the invention and the manner in which it is carried out reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, represent some ofthe different ornamental articles which may be produced by my improved method, the shading on said figures representing the peculiar finished surface of the glass that my method provides.

In carrying out the improved method I first take a piece of glass of the approximate size of the article I desire to produce, but somewhat larger than the same, and preferably lay it upon a cushion or several layers of felt or some other similar soft article to take up the shock of the subsequent operation or steps and then by striking or hammering on the edge of the glass I chip off therefrom around the margin small particles of the glass according to the finished outline which I desire to produce until the glass has assumed substantially the desired margin, contour, or configuration. At those points where the outline has not been rendered sufliciently distinct by means of the hammering or striking operation I finish the same by the use of a file, which I preferably first dip in water or milk, using the edge of the file against the margin of the glass to form notches or the like, as may be desired,for the finishing operation. If desired, I may use the same file for the hammering and striking operation, as described, and having become expert in my method I may hold the glass in my hand while operating upon it instead of laying it upon a cushion or similar soft surface.

It is to be particularly noted that in addition to the novelty itself, which resides in first hammering against the margin of the glass to produce the desired contour and then subsequently filing any slightly-irregular points or places which may have remained, my invention produces by the chipping or hammering process a peculiar flaky border around the finished article as designated by the shading in the various figures of the drawings, and this flaky margin adds greatly to the appearance of the ornamental article, as it provides innumerable angles and surfaces for the reflection of the light, causing the article to possess irradiating characteristics.

It is evident as described by the foregoing and illustrated in the drawings that my invention is capable of producing ornamental glass articles of various shapes or designs.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The herein-described improved method of making glass ornaments with marginal edges provided with innumerable angles to impart to the ornament an iridescent appearance at the edges, consisting of striking the pieces of glass with a file to produce the desired outline in the rough and subsequently filing the edges to form notches for completing the operailaion, the file being first dipped in water or mil r.
