HOOP-COUPLING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,869, dated December 2, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LAMARTINE R. FULDA, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Adjustable Couplings for Tank-Hoops; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to a device which I call an adjustable couplingfor tank-hoops.

It consists of a clamp formed of screw-eye bolts bent and connected in a peculiar Way, so that the ends of the hoop maybe attached to this screw-clamp, and whenever the hoop becomes loose, by reason of shrinkage of the tank, or for other reasons, it may be tightened by screwing up this clamp.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is an enlarged view of one of the clamps or couplings. Fig. 2 is a View showing the application of my device to tankhoops.

A A are two eyebolts, having a portion of the shank B extending from them and fiattened to a length equal to the width of the hoop. Beyond this point each of the bolts is turned at right angles, so that the two stand parallel, and they are screw-threaded, as shown at C, having nuts D, adapted to screw upon the threaded ends. The threaded end of each of the bolts passes through the eye A of the opposite bolt, so that when put together and the nuts screwed upon the ends of the bolts the device forms a complete clamp.

The hoop E has its meeting ends bent, so that each end clasps the flattened portion B of one of the bolts, as shown, and the hoop having been made of such alength that when it is connected with the clamp and placed upon .the tank it encircles and fits the tank at the proper point. It will be seen that if a Serial No. 361,134. (No model.)

hoop becomes loosened for any reason, it is only necessary to take a wrench and screw up the nuts until the hoop has been tightened by drawing its ends nearer together.

This device is especially useful when applied to the hoops of large tanks, such as are intended for containing wine or water, and which are made tapering from the bottom toward the top, and it enables me to always maintain the hoops at a suitable tension to hold the tank properly together and with very little difficult-y in adjusting them for this purpose.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An adjustable clamp and coupling device for tank-hoops, consisting of two screwbolts fitted together, each having one end threaded and the other end bent at right angles, and formed with one eye or opening to receive the threaded end of the opposite bolt, said bent ends being adapted to pass through and hold the bent ends of the hoop, substantially as herein described.

2. A coupling device for tank-hoops, consisting of the bolts having the eyes at one end, a flattened portion adjacent to each of the eyes, adapted to receive and hold the bent adjacent ends of the hoop, a screw-threaded portion standing at right angles with the flattened portion, the screw-threaded portion of each bolt passing through the eye of the opposite bolt, and having the tension-nuts upon the screw-threaded portion, substantially as herein described.
