' ETBEE HOOK AND CLIP. (Application filed rabies,
. NVE/VTORS IIIIIIHIIHHH Affamey UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE NIKIRK SCHINDEL AND AARON COLLINS, OF OAKLEY, IDAHO.
WHIFFLETREE HOOK AND CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,532, dated May 1, 1900. Application filed February 28, 1900. Serial No. 6,850. (Ndmodeh) T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE NIKIRK .SCHINDEL and AARON COLLINS, citizens of the United States, residing at Oakley, in the county of Cassia and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiftletree Hooks and Clips; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and usefulimprovements in whiflietree clips and hooks, and especially to an adjustable clip which is adapted to be held to the whiffletree by means of a set-screw which is made to bind against the latter, said screw having an eye in which the ring of the whiffletree-hook is held, said ring being of sufficient size to pass over the end of the whiffletree, so that the pull on the book will come on the rear side of the clip and toward the whiffletree.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain. the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
Our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of our invention, showing the clip as attached to a whiffletree. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the whiffletree-hook, shown as attached to the clip on the whiffletree. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Reference now being bad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a whiffletree of ordinary construction, which may be made of wood or other suitable material. The clip Bis made up of two bands C and C, which flare outward and are integral with the solid portion D, which is centrally apertured, as at d. The walls of said aperture are threaded to receive the screw F, which has an eye F. The wall of said aperture above its threaded portion is beveled, as seen at d,to receive the outwardly-flaring portion of the eye of said screw. The whifiietree-hook H has an enlarged ring H formed out of its shank portion, said ring being mounted in the eye of the screw F.
In applying the clip to the whifdetree the clip, made up of the two outwardly-flaring bands, is fitted over the end of the whifidetree and the set-screw F screwed through the clip, so that its inner end will come in contact with the whiffletree and securely hold the clip in place. In tightening the screw the whiiile- 6 5 tree-hook maybe utilized by bringing the ring against the eye of the screw on diametricallyopposite portions of the latter, the ring being utilized as would a bar placed through the eye for the purpose of screwing the threaded shank down so that its free end would bind against the whiflietree. hen the clip has been securely fastened to the whiffletree, the ring is passed over the end of the latter, and when the hook is fastened to thetraoe the pull on the hook will come toward the whifiletree and toward the threaded end of the screw.
In the provision of a clip constructed in accordance with our invention it will be noted that it is not necessary to bore holes through the whiffletree, which necessarily impairs the strength of the latter, and the clip may be adjusted to any portion of the whiffletree and easily applied and removed.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combined whiffletree hook and clip comprising a clip having two flaring bands integral with a solid apertured portion, a bind 9o ing-screw mounted in said aperture, and a whiflletree-hook connected to the eye of said screw, as set forth.
2. In combination with the whiffletree-clip made up of two outwardly-flaring bands in 5 tegral with a solid portion which is apertured and threaded, a whiftletree-hook having an enlarged ring formed out of its shank portion, said ring passing through an eye in said screw, and designed to be passed over said clip, as 103 shown' and described.
In testimony whereof we aifix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
