ATnNT Fiucne SYLVANUS .I. TALBOT, OF MILFORD, NEIV HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO J OIIN MCLANE, OF SAME PLACE.
IRONING-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,972, dated November 18, 1890.
Application led March 27, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLvANUs J TALBOT, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at Milford, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing- Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled Io in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to ironing-boards, and more particularly to ironing-boards for shirts, and has for its object to keep the neck binding or band in proper form While being ironed,
so that the collar will sit well.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of an ironing-board with zo my device attached; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the board, showing the grooves in its sides.
Referring now to the drawings, A represents an ironing-board covered with cloth or other suitable material of a size and shape convenient to accommodate a shirt-bosom laid thereon. It is provided about its sides and lower edge with a groove a, for a purpose hereinafter explained, and on its sur- 3o face or face at or near the top are two selfadjusting blocks or forms B B, secured thereto by pivots b b and extended or spread out- Ward by a spiral spring c, inserted between them, as shown. These blocks or forms B B have a curved outer face m, which it is designed shall, under the action of spring c, bear against the inner face of the neckband of the shirt, thus keeping it erect and in a proper form while being ironed.
d d are pins passing through slots e e in the blocks B B and secured in the board A, which pins serve as an additional means of securing the blocks to the board and also guide and limit the outward extension or throw of the blocks under the action of spring c. By means of the blocks, the pivots to which they are secured, and the spring the device' is rendered automatically expansible.
D is a fixed stud between the blocks or 5o forms B B, and has at its upper end a button f, on which the neckband of the shirt is buttoned when being ironed.
E is one of a set of keys, which, in combiserai No. 345,600. (No man.)
nation with the groove a iu the board A, secure and stretch the shirt-bosom over the board, so that it may be held in proper position and a smooth surface presented for ironing. Several keys are employed, the material of the shirt being crowded and held between the keys and the groove about the entire edge of the board, except its top.
In operation the shirt-bosom is first smoothly spread over the ironing-board and secured to the same by the keys E. The neckband is made to embrace the blocks or forms B B, and is buttoned to the button f. Under the action of blocks B B, extended or spread outward by spring c, the neckband of the shirt is held taut and erect in a suitable form to be ironed.
The ironing-board and the blocks or forms may be of any convenient shape.
1. The combination, with an ironing-board, of a fixed stud provided with a button on its end, to which the neckband of a shirt is buttoned, and curved blocks or forms pivoted thereon below said stud and around which the neckband is placed, said blocks provided with a guide-slot, a pin in each of said slots, and a spring secured to said blocks, whereby the device is automatically adapted to shirtp necks of any measure, substantially as described.
2. Au ironing-board for shirt-bosoms provided with means for securing the bosom to the board and for stretching the neckband when the bosom is thus secured, consisting of a groove in the sides and lower edge of the board, fastenings for holding the bosom therein, pivoted curved blocks near the top of the board adapted to Iit and bear against the inner face of the neckband, a spring by which said blocks are expanded and by which the neckband of the secured bosom is stretched and kept in proper form while the bosom is ironed, and guide -pins extending through slots in said blocks for guiding and limiting the throw of the blocks when stretching the neckband, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
