Description

oooooooo GGGGGGGG BBBBBBBBB K.
Patented Jan. 27,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES JOSEPH, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ROSE JOSEPH, OE SAME PLACE.
POCKET-BOOK.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,373, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed July 31, 1890. Serial No. 350,453. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES JOSEPH, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a pocketbook of that class in which, besides the usual bill-pockets, a coin-pocket with an independent frame is arranged, said coin-pocket being so constructed that the saine can open to a greater extent, so as to get at the coin in the same with great facility, while the dropping' of the coin from the pocket is fully prevented; and the invention consists of a pocketbook provided with a coin-pocket the frame of which is applied to a flange stitched to the gussets of the coiirpocket, while the lining of the same is extended upward above the exterior gusset, so as to form a guard-flap, that extends from one corner of the frame to the other on or approximately on a line with the top of the frame, said guard-Hap being Afolded in between the jaws of the frame when the same is closed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l representsa perspective viewof myiniproved pocketbook, showing the saine in open position. Fig. 2 is a detail top view of the same, also in open position, showing the inode of attaching the fraine of the coin-pocket to the gusset ot' the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical 'transverse section on the line 2 2, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts. v
Referring to the drawings, A represents a pocket-book, which is provided with a nuniber ol bill-pockets a and a coin-pocket B, which is closed by an independent iralne B', the hinged jaws ol which are closed by a suitable locking device. For the purpose of forming a frame of larger size, whereby the coin-pocket B can be opened to a greater extent and access to the interior of the eoinpocket facilitated, a leather strip or vliange d is stitched to the exterior gussets d of the coiirpocket, said iiange or strips d being used for the purpose of applying the jaws of the frame of the coin-pocket thereto. The interior lining of the coin-pocket is so cut that the side walls of the same are extended from one cornerto the other of the closing-frame ot the coin-pocket, so as to forno guard-ilaps e, by which the coin is prevented from dropping out of the pocket, said flaps forming, when the coinpocket is in open position, guard-walls that extend across both ends of the coin-pocket on a line, or nearly so, with the top of the frame, as shown in Fig. l. The guard-flaps e are foldedin outward direction, so as to be folded up between the jaws of the frame, as shown in Fig. 3, they being thereby not in the way of the closing frame. In bags having sector-shaped gussets extending above the top of the frame, such gussets prevent easy access to the coin and render the construction awkward and cumbersome.
My improved pocket-book has the advantage that by the use of the guard-flaps on a line with the top of t-he frame the dropping of money from the eoiirpocket is prevented, while a better appearance is imparted to the ooin-poeket when the book is opened and the coins are easily accessible.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A pocket-book having an interior coinpocket which is provided with a closing frame, the hinged jaws of which are applied to the outwardly-bent strips or flanges stitched to the end gussets of the coin-pockets, and with a lining the side walls of which are extended 'from one corner of the closing traine to the other on a line with the top of said frame, forming` folding guard-flaps for the coinpockets, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my naine in pres once of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J OSEPII.
