Description

(Ne Medel.) l
R. A. HARTMAN. PAPER 0R GARD RACK. Neeseoo. Petented sept. 16,1890.
il l/l/ l lll/6 le. l
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUFUS ALBERT HARTMAN, OF FAIRMOUNT SPRINGS, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER OR CARD RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,600, dated September 16, 1890i.
l l Application iled April 16, 1890. Serial No. 348,218. Y (No model.)
To all whom, it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, RUFUs ALBERT HART- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fairmount Springs, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racks for Cards, Letters, or Newspapers;
and I do hereby declare that the following is.
a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved rack as it appears when in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the rack as it appears when folded or doubled upon itself as when not in use or ready for shipment. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the rack at right angles through the middle of the pockets; and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of a series ofthe racks connected to form a (i Set.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
. My invention relates to devices for holding cards, letters, newspapers, and other articles of a similar nature which can be folded iiat and placed in a clip lwhen not in use; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the folding-rack adapted to be hung upon a wall or other ver tical support, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. Y
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letters A and B designate the two parts of the rack-body, which are hinged together at C in such a manner that they may be folded together, back to back, as illustrated in Fig. 2, so as to occupy a minimum of space when the rack is not in use or when it is to be packed or shipped. Instead, however, of making the rack in two parts only, it may be made in three or more parts if of large size, so as to fold together in a small space convenient for storage and shipment.
The front sides of the hinged sections A and Bare covered with a sheet of tin, brass,
more clearly in Fig. 3, forming an inwardly or rearwardly projecting bulge F, which presses against the newspaper or other article inserted into the pocket, and thus oper# ates to hold the saine in place therein. The upper end of the pocket, forming an outwardly-flaring lip G, admits of the easy insertion of the paper into the pocket. `Each of these S-shaped flaps D has its middle part cut out to form a secondary flap or tongue H,
of the same shape as the body of the iap from which it is out, only smaller. This tongue II forms la spring-clip for holding cards, letters, and other small articles independent of the larger pockets, and also increases the spring or elasticity of the latter, besides greatly .improving the ornamental appearance of the device as-a whole. The sheets of brass or other metal from which these flaps and clips are cut out are fastened upon the backing-boards A and B by means of brads or short tacks I, the edges of the metal being bent over the edge of the backingboards and then tacked thereto, as shown in the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that this device is inexpensive, and at the same time easy and convenient to use, as well as ornamental in appearance. If desired, the sheet metal may be embossed or stamped with ornamental designs which will harmonize with the outlines of the pocketflaps and their clips or tongues.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United StatesA A As an improved article of manufacture, the folding rack or holder herein shown and described, comprising two or more hinged sections adapted to be folded upon one another and having a covering and facing of sheet my own I have hereunto afxed my signature metal cut out to form series of aps D and in presence of two Witnesses.v tongues H, said fiapsand tongues being in- 1 tegral with each other and with the sheet- RUFUS ALBERT HARTMAN' 5 metal covering or facing, substantially as set Witnesses:
forth. HENRY J. YAPLE, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as M. N. DAILEY.
