illustrating a modified prises 'a foldableor collapsible boar-like base or body portion'l (Fig. lihavingsuitable niches,
alcoves or display pockets 2 at one side thereof 5 and, if desired, similar niches or the like may be provided at the opposite side thereof. A suitable display card or shield I may be mounted on the top of the baseand may have suitable decorative Preferably, the 20 other suitable material of any desired thickness which may be decorated, if desired, by colorcontrast, printing or lithographing. Also, the shape of the devicemay be'in any suitable ornamental 25 form.
The baseor body portion maybe constructed v ,of a single sheet of material,- but preferably com,-
prises a front member 5 havinga centerpanel '6 and and panels '1', and a correspondingback so member 9 having a similar center panel l0 and. endpanels H. The members 5 and 9 provide the front or back sides of the base and are substantially identical in design and construction to permit them to be used interchangeably, how- '35 ever,,for describing the construction of the, device more clearly the member 5' will be referred to as the front memberan'd the member 9 will be referred'to as the back member. The membars 5 and 9 maybe foldably connected or attached to each other by foldable strips I! at the end panels of either the front or back'member and preferablythe end panels are foldable with respect to the center panels to facilitate collapsing the front and back'members in flat position. 5 ;It will be understood thatjthe base or body may be in any box-like form, other than the hexagonal design'illustrated herein. For example, the base I may be rectangular or octagonal. The base pref- .erably flares upwardly and outwardly as shown,
but may have vertical sides or may be in the shape of a frustrum of a pyramid.
In order to provide the niches or pockets the front and back members have cut-out openings H at the center panels thereof. These openings at tabs H or the like adapted to fit into suitable slots described hereafter for holding the doors in open position. Also, suitable recesses l9 may be provided to facilitate engaging the doors to fold them. A If desired, the foldable flaps or doors I may be omitted by stamping out openings H of suit able shape and size. For example, if the flaps or doors are not desired, the opening may be circular, oval or triangular. When the doors are omitted the niches or pockets of the display device are not provided with side walls, so that portions of articles exhibited may project be-,-
ject beyond the ends of the shelves 20,- When the side walls are omitted, a lighting system may be installed within the display cabinet whereby the illumination may enter from the? sides of the pockets and fall upon the objects on the shelves.
The "bottoms or floors of the pockets at the front side of the 'display'device may be formed from foldabie flaps 2|] cut from an upright sheet member 2| and may beattached adhesively to the inner side of the center panel 5 adjacent to the openings II by foldable strips 22. The sheet member 2| preferably extends vertically down wardiy as far as'the lower edge of the base so that its lower end 23rests on the floor or surface where the display is set up and acts as an additional support. I V
When the flaps 20 are cut or stamped from the sheet 2|, openings 24 are formed. These openings may be closed by attaching a member 25 to thevertical member 2| at the backside thereof, having vertical .portion 26 Providing a back wall for the niches or pockets at both sides of the device. The wall portion 25 preferably. has slits or slots 21 substantially at the side edges thereof for receiving the tabs ll of thedoors or .flaps l5 (Fig.8). It will be under-, stood that the number of back wall members 25 utilized, corresponds'to the number'of display pockets and openings 24. Preferably, the members 25* are each provided with a foldable' horizontal flap 29 adapted to form the bottom or floor for the niches or pockets at the back side of the display device. The flaps 29 may be adhesively attached to the inner side of the panel adjacent to theopenings by suitable foldable strips 30. 1 A
In order to close the upper end of the body or base, a cover member 3| is attached to the front and back members 5 and 9. Preferably, the cover member conforms to the contoursof the side and end panels so that the closed end is neat in appearance, and is foldably attached to the members 5 and 9'by foldable strips 32. Preferably,
the cover is provided with a crease 3 4 to permit it tobe folded upwardly to colla s the body or base portion. Suitable slots or slits 35 are provided in the cover for receiving tabs 35 (Fig. 1)
of the display card or shield 4 mounted on the base. The card I has legs or flaps 31 adapted to be spread apart to form a support for the card. In Figs. 2, 3 and 4 the card has been omitted in order to illustrate other details of the invention more clearly and to illustrate that the device may be used either with or without the card.
In the manufacture of the device, the various parts are stamped from sheets of cardboard or other material, are provided with the folding creases and are thereafter folded. The members 5 and 9 are then attached to each other and the back wall members 25 are attached to the reinforcing sheet 2|. 30 of the floor portion 20 and 29 respectively, are attached to the inner sides of the members 5 and 9, and. to complete the body, the top or cover 3| is attached to the upper ends of the members 5 and 9. Preferably, the various parts or members are attached by pasting or gluing them together, but may be assembled with staples or in any other suitable manner.
In shipping the device, the doors or flaps I! of the niches or pockets are folded into the plane of the center panels (Figs. 2 and 4) and the back and front members I and S'are pushed toward eachpther permitting the cover 3| to foldupwardly and permitting the floors or bottoms 20 and 29 of the niches to fold downwardly.
While the'bodyof'the display device is shown only partially collapsed in Fig. 4it will be readilyunderstood that "the parts may befurther folded in the direction indicated by the arrows,
until the device is flattened out. The legs 31- of the card 4 may be folded together so that the card may be shipped in flattened or collapsed position. Preferably, the body and card are shipped dismantled to conserve packing space. When it 'is desired to setup the display device,
theend panels of the body are pushed slightly toward each other which causes the front and back members 5 and 9 to move apart'and permit the cover 3| to fold downwardly and the floor members 20 and 29 to fold upwardly. The doors or flaps l5 are then folded inwardly into the body and the tabs. i! are inserted into the slots 21. The doors when in this position rest upon the floors of the pocket to reinforce the display against being crushed. .Also, the upright sheet member 2| has its lower end 23 resting on the supporting surface for the device to additionally strengthen the device. Thereafter, the display card 4 may be mounted on the cover 2| by inserting the' tabs 36 into the slots 35. The display device is then adapted to receive suitable articles of merchandise which may be arranged in the niches or pockets or on the top in any desired manner.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 there is shown a modified form of the display devicelnwhich the front and side portions of the device maybe formed by a member 38 having cut-out flaps at the front forming the openings ll. The flaps may be folded inwardly to provide supporting shelv m for articles to be exhibited, and preferably are foldably attached at their free edges to anupright sheet member 2 foriningthe back wall of the pockets.
,A suitable back member 40. may be foldably at "tached to the member 38 at II and a suitable foldable top portion 42 maybe foldably attachedto theupper edges of the member 2|, 38 and 40.
Thereafter the strips 22 and U If desired, a basket portion 44 adapted to retain ing notch 54' thereon adapted .to' cooperate with attached to the display device so that it may be doubled back substantially against the rear of the cabinet to conservespace during shipment of the display devices. To, facilitate folding the-display r construction and arrangement of the parts herecard may be provided with a, crease or articulation 41' at a point; above the upwardly portion 45 of the back member.
In order toholdthe card upright in the display position, a suitable supporting member 49' is utilized which may have one end portion fas-" v tened to the display; card at one sideof thecrease {Land the other end at the other side of the crease. Preferab1y,-,thesupporting member "has a foldable portion 50 provided byavertical joint or creaseil adapted to be turned to a position substantially at right angles to the other portion of the member. which is attached to l the card. The portiontt-may be held in that position by; a suitable foldable wing or ear 52 stamped from the member 49 and having a locka notch 55 in the portion 50. When the wing is in the supporting position, illustrated more particularly in Fig.1 5, theflap portion 50 prevents the; card from being folded along the crease l1 and serves to hold the card .in display position;
' When the wing or ear is'released the flap 50 may be folded against the back of the card andthe card may be folded against the back of the device.
The latter operationis accomplished by pro- 7 viding suitable horizontal creases 56, 51 and 59 a on the supporting member 49 and'the flap 50. The crease 56 is preferably-below articulation 41 I and substantially adjacent to the attached lower 2 portion, of 49, while the crease 59 is above'the' crease 41 and is substantiallyadjacent to the attached upper portion of member". :The crease 51 is positioned'betweenlcreases Stand 59 and. preferably above horizontal articulation 41 of the card 46. Preferably the distance between the creases 56 and 41 is equal to the distance between creases 51 and v59,.and the distance between the creases 56 and ,51..is equal to the distance betweenthe creases 41 and; 59 so that the display .card and the portion'of the supportingmember between the creases ,56, and .51 fold back in par-" allel relationship. In this manner, the card may be freely folded, but at the same time the Joints or creases are in staggered relation to strengthen thesupporting device. With this arrangement oi.
parts the card will beheld in anerect position .by the supporting member, even if the card should be severed along the crease 41.
Also, the staggering permits the card be folded against the rear interposing a b lkYioint-of several thicknesses,
fpoints facilitate the folding of the card to a thin cross-section thatoccupies small space and prevents undue bulging at the folded portions.
It will be seen that the present display. device hasv display niches orcompartments-at two sides thereby making it very desirable foruse on sales counters, since the device presents a pleasing appearancefrom-allsides. ,The display may also be used for decorating store windows, one side being presented to the storefront and the other side being. visible: from theinterior of the store. The a I device is easily set up and collapsed and can readily be stored or shipped in its flat position. The device is rugged in construction and can withextending and back panels having a member-intermediate said front and back panof the cabinet withoutv ing means. associated stand any rough usage to which it may be sub- Jected. In addition, it is-suitable for displaying relatively heavy articles of merchandise.
