Description

(No Model.)
S. B. DAVIS. cLoD FENDER.
No. 427,160. Patented May 6', 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL B. DAVIS, OF CLINTON, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS B. MYERS, OF SAME PLACE.
CLOD-FEN DER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,160, dated May 6', 1890. Applicationfiled January 25, 1889. Serial No. 297,585. (No model.)
T0 LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, SAMUEL B. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, Vermilion county, State of Indiana, have invented and produced a new and useful Clod- Fender Attachment for Double Oultivator- Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in @lod-fender for cultivators; and the objects of my improvement are, iirst, to provide for Vthe throwing of the clods and similar matters away from the row of corn; second, to prevent dirt from falling directly down on the row of corn; third, to provide for the throwing of loose and fine dirt next to the row of corn from either side; fourth, to provide au arched fender that shall preserve its proper working shape or adjustment, except under great and unusual pressure. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan View, and Fig. 2 is an end sectional view.
CL a represent the runners of the fender,
which is composed of two hinged sections. Each of the runners is a solid piece of work, to which the ribs or wires b b and the top pieces c c are attached by means of rivets.
The letters CZ d represent the hinges fastening the two halves together. ing is such that the fender would spread apart flat if it were not for a stop or the position and form of the hinges.
Let-ters g g represent the hind end of the rods b b and the top pieces c c, so turned as to throw alltrash and clods away from the row.
Letters h h represent short pieces fastened to the runners by rivets, and having a hole in the front end, into which the middle fore arms 'i t' hook. This middle piece is a rod and hooks at the other end into the front piece g g. The pieces marked g g fasten to the plowbeams by a bolt.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clod-fender having two sections centrally hinged to each other, each section composed of the runners ct, the arched ribs or supports b', the rods b, and the top central plates c, the plates, rods, and runners being turned upwardly and outwardly at their rear ends, the hinges allowing the sections free motion inward, and having a stop to limit their spread substantially as described.
SAMUEL B. DAVIS.
