HUN U" lllll UNITED STATES GREENBURY REED, OF GB EENOASTLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARROWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,067, dated June 18, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Harrow, invented by GREENBURY REED, of Greencastle, in the county of Putnam and State of Indiana.
Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a harrow illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of harrows, so that the teeth can be conveniently cleared of rubbish when required; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents an ordinary barrow-frame, to which the teeth B are attached in the ordinary manner. The. teeth B should be made a little longer than usual, so that they may pass through the clearer-frame O and still have sufficient working length.- O is the clearer-frame,
which is made in the same shape as the harrow-frame A, but lighter. The forward end of the frame 0 should be turned upward,.or should have a short upwardly-curved draw-bar attached to it to guard against rubbish getting between the frames A and C. To the frame 0 are attached four, more or less, standards, D, which pass up through holes in the harrowframe A, and upon the upwardly-projecting ends of which are placed coiled-wire springs E. The upper ends of the springs E are secured to the upper ends of the standards D, and their lower ends rest upon the upper sides of the bars of the barrow-frame A, so as to draw and hold the frame Gclose up against the frame A. To the frame 0 are attached standards F, which pass up through holes in the frame A, and to the upper ends of which are pivoted'the ends of a cross-bar or shaft, G. To the crossbar or shaft G, near its ends, are attached levers H, the rear ends of which are connected by a crossbar or round, I, which serves as a handle for operating the said levers.
To the forward ends of the levers H are piv-- oted theupper ends of the connecting-rods or chains J, the lower ends of which are pivoted:
to the harrow-frame A.
By this construction, by operating the levers H, the frames A (l are forced apart, forcing Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The clearer-frame 0, having standards D, with springs E, combined, as described, with harrow A, placed thereover, so as to enable "said frame 0 to be held by springs against harrow, and to be moved down, for the purpose set forth.
GREENBURY REED. Witnesses:
