EYEGLASSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,106, dated October 29, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT A. COWING, a citizen of the United States, residing at at kins, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spectacles or Eyeglasses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention relates to spectacles or eyeglasses in which each end of the spring is secured to an eye-piece by two minute screws or rivets. This spring being often broken and requiring replacement, the operation involves the expenditure of valuable time and skilled labor.

The special object of my invention is to save one-half of the time usually required by making the spring with an open slot at each end, so that two of the four screws employed will never need to be removed.

Figures 1 and 2 are elevations in perspective, showing my invention applied to spectacles or eyeglasses of somewhat different construction. Fig. 3 is a plan view in detail of a spring straightened out.

In the drawings, A represents one of the eye-pieces, and B the spring which connects them. Each end of the spring B is fastened to an eye-piece Aby two minute screws 0 D, because, although one would hold it, two are necessary to keep the spring and eye-pieces always in the same plane.

The screws being very minute and the spring bent, it is very troublesome work to put in and take out these screws. To lessen the time and labor required, I construct the spring B with an open slot 1) at each end, so that when the screw 0 has been removed the screw D may remain untouched, the open slot permitting the end of the spring to be drawn out from under the head of screw D.

I am aware that an eyeglass-spring has been made integral with the nose-springs and provided with two slots on each side, the same being combined with T-headed studs on the eye-framesg but \Vhat I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

In eyeglasses, the two screws C D, working in projections a a of the eye-frames, in combination with a spring B, having a slot 1) and an adjacent screw-hole b on each end thereof, as and for the purpose set forth.
