IRONING DEVICE.
N0. 403,045. Patented May "7, 1889;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALDWELL HAYES, OF OSKALOOSA, KANSAS.
IRONING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,045, dated May 7, 1889.
Application tiled October 16, 1888. Serial No. 288,207. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, CALDWELL HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Os kaloosa, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Ironing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to ironing devices, and its objects are to secure auniform pressure of the iron on the board, to provide for a vertical adjustment of the device relatively to the table, to permit the facile detachment of the iron from the tension device, and to accomplish these ends with structural simplicity and economy. I accomplish these ends by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an ironing-table having my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation (partly broken) of the detached device. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 4.- is a detail view of the yoke-arm depending from the base-plate. Fig. 5 represents abellcrank arm terminally attached to the shaft whereon the spring is mounted. Fig. 6 represents a hooked arm, which grasps the lower end of a spiral spring that serves to insure an elastic action of the spring-lever, and hence the joined iron; and Fig. 7 represents the end of the spring-lever by which it holds the iron, which has a recess near its point to this end.
The same characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
To a suitable table,A, having the side rails, a, and mounted on legs B, I attach the slotted base-plate N of the device, having terminal hooks 0, held by nuts 0 on projections from the plate, the ends 0 whereof encircle the legs B, being held thereon by the set=scrcws P. In the base of the plate N are secured the hand-screws K, which serve to horizontally hold the yoke L, to which the headed pin J is attached, whose curved end J holds the lower end ,1", of the spring I, the upper end, 1',
of which passes through perforations h h in the spring-lever D, which has an annular ring, (Z, that serves to raise the spring-lever when impelled by the arm E of the lever E, which is fulcrumed in bearings e by pin e. The spring-lever terminates in a nut, (1 that serves as an abutment for the spiral spring M, whose other end rests against the boss f, projecting from the bottom of the shaft F, thereby restoring the lever D when it is released from the lever E. The upper end of the spring-lever D is reduced in size, thereby forming a curved spring that terminates in a hook, d, adapted to fit a corresponding depression in the iron C.
It will be understood that the device can be raised to any altitude by adjusting it on the legs of the table through the set-screws P; that the iron can be moved in the arc of a circle by reason of the pivotal j oinder of the lever D to the shaft F; that the are of operation can be increased by reason of the bellerank arms H and the springs I, and that the joinder of the end d of the spring-lever D with the iron C can be readily severed by raising the spring-lever by means of the lever E and its arm E.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, the ironing device consisting of a bed-plate, N, having terminal hooks O, for attachment, by setscrews P, to the legs of a table, a shaft, F, superposed over the plate N and secured thereto as shown, having terminal bell-cranks H, connected by springs I and hooked pins J to the yoke L, suspended from plate N, the spring-lever D, pivotally held in the shaft F, having a collar, (1, a nut, d and encircled by spring M, the hook d for attachment to the iron C, and the lever E, that serves to reciprocate the lever D.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CALDWELL HAYES.
