Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. HASTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enterprise, in the county of Dickinson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Switch, of which the following is a specification. I v
The subject of'this invention is a switch intended for use on railways.
The main object of the invention is the provision of means in the switch throw or stand to prevent injury to the mechanism due to shock or strain.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lever for a switch throw.
The invention also contemplates generally improving the construction and enhancing the utility of switches.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a switch stand constructed in accordance with the invention, a portion being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of the lever;
Fig. 4 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the same.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference:
As the invention is an improvement in the switch stand shown and described in my Patent No. 1,258,678, issued March 12, 1918, the general construction of the stand will be but briefly described.
The numeral 1 designates the upright body or stand proper, which is constructed of suitable metal. and which has a suitable base 2 adapted to be secured upon the ties or other foundation, said body 1 being provided with a chamber or cavity 3 in the lower portion thereof opening downwardly to house some of the Working parts and protect them from the elements. The upper end of the body 1 is provided with an annular outstanding flange 4, and a vertical shaft or staff 5 is journaled for rotation through the upper portion of the body 1 and projects downwardly within the chamber 3. The upperi end of the shaft 5 carries a suitable signa 6.
As a means for transmitting motion from the actuating shaft 5, a cylindrical cam 7 is secured upon the lower portion of said shaft within the chamber 3, and is provided with a circumferential cam groove 8, provided with a portion 9 extending through substantially one half of a circle and disposed in a common plane at right angles with the shaft 5, said groove 8 having an offset portion 10 also extending through substantially one half of a circle. The lower end of the shaft 5 is journaled or swiveled through a strip or bar 11 terminally secured to the base 2 and extending across the mouth of the chamber 3. The strip 11 is provided adjacent to its opposite edges with upstanding bearings 12 to which are pivoted the elbows of bell crank levers 13.
The bell crank lever 13 constitutes the improvement of the present invention and comprises an arm 30 which merges into the angularly disposed, bifurcated arm 82, between the prongs of which is mounted a stri or bar 33 which projects beyond the en s of the prongs of the arm 32 and forms a section of the other arm of the bell crank lever. The bifurcated arm 32 and the strip 33 are provided with alining apertures, one for the reception of a pin'34 by which the bell crank lever is pivotally connected at its elbow to the supports 12. and the other for the reception of a shear bolt or pin 35.
The pin or bolt 35 is made of light material so that the bolt will shear through in case of excessive strain and so relieve the parts of the device from injury.
The arm 30 has a roller 81 pivotally secured thereto which roller fits in the cam groove that the lever may be rocked by the cam.
Links or bridle rods 14 connect the end of the strip 33 with the switch points (not shown) and the device is operated to throw the switch by means of the lever 22. as set forth in the Letters Patent above referred to.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent is l. A switch embodying a switch stand, a
bell crank lever fulcrumed in the stand, means engaging one arm of the lever for rocking the lever, a bridle rod connecting the other arm of the lever to a switch point, and a connection between the arms of the lever detachable under excess strain to permit the arms to move independent of each other.
2. A switch embodying a switch stand, a lever fulcrumed in the stand, means engaging one arm of the lever for rocking the lever, a connection between the other a "m of the lever and a switch point, and a shear pin connecting the arms of the lever.
3. A switch embodying a switch stand, a lever fulcrumed in the stand and having one arm bifurcated, a strip inserted in the bifurcated arm and extending beyond the end thereof, a shear pin connecting the strip and the bifurcated arm, means journaled in the stand for rocking the lever, and a bridle rod neeaeve connecting the free end of the strip with a switch point.
4:. A bell crank lever having a bifurcated arm and an aperture at its elbow and in its bifurcated arm, a strip inserted in the bifurcated arm and extending beyond the end of the arm, said strip having apertures alining with the aperture at the elbow and in the bifurcated arm, a pin inserted through the aperture at the elbow and the alining aperture of the strip, and a shear pin insert ed in the aperture in the bifurcated arm and the alining aperture of the strip.
