Abstract

A knee board for being pushed along a seam of a carpet behind a hot melt seaming iron; the knee board comprising a flat panel made of cast aluminum, and having a padded knee cup upon its upper side into which a worker can fit his knee, and the upper side of the panel also including a padded, integral raised block upon its upper side upon which the worker can rest his foreleg.

U.S. Patent SEAM SKATE FOR CARPETS This invention relates generally to carpet layer tools.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a seam skate for use by a carpet layer. and which is designed to be used by pushing the same by the workers knee behind a hot melt seaming iron.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a seam skate for carpets. and wherein the seam skate is to be used for pressing the seam of the carpet so to more firmly secure the seam.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a seam skate for carpets which is more efficient as a tool because it is pushed along the seam by the operators knee, thus leaving both hands of the worker free to push the hot melt iron and pull the carpet seam together.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a seam skate for carpets which accordingly speeds up the operation so to cut down on the cost of the operation.
Other objects are to provide a seam skate for carpets which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will become readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a side elevation view thereof shown in operative use.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral represents a seam skate for carpets according to the present invention wherein there is a generally flat, rectangular panel 11 made from cast aluminum and which is approximately inches long and five inches wide. 1
Upon the upper side of the panel 11 there is integrally formed an upwardly extending cup 12 of generally semi-circular configuration and the inner side thereof is fitted with a thick pad 13 that extends down upon the upper side of the panel 11. Accordingly the padded cup provides comfort for a knee l4 placed therewithin as shown in FIG. 2.
Near a rear portion of the panel, there is integrally formed an upstanding block 15 the upper surface of which is transversely concaved as shown at 16 and upon which there is secured a thick pad 17.
As shown in FIG. 2, it is to be noted that the forward end 18 of the panel 11 is slightly upwardly rounded so that the skate can be easily pushed ahead across a carpet without sagging therewith.
in operative use, as shown in FIG. 2, a carpet layer worker 19 simply places his knee 14 into the cup 12 and rest his foreleg 20 across the top of the padded block 15 so that he is comfortable and at the same time able to push the skate ahead with his knee without use of his hands which are thus free so to push a hot melt iron and also pull the carpet seam together.
Thus a useful tool is provided that saves time and cuts carpet seaming costs in materials and labor.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it is understood that such changes are within the spirit and scope of the present invention as is defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A carpet seam skate comprising: a substantially rectangular panel having a first major flat surface, means consisting essentially of a cup defining an opening adapted to receive and support a knee positioned directly on the other major surface of the panel opposite the first major surface with the cup opening oriented primarily towards one end of the panel, and a raised block portionpositioned on the same side of the panel as is the cup between the cup opening and the end of the panel towards which the cup is oriented, whereby a worker may readily engage and disengage the seam skate to flatten and merge a carpet seam.
2. A seam skate as set forth in claim 1 in which both the exposed open surface of the cup and the upper surface of the raised block portion are padded.
3. A seam skate as set forth in claim 2 in which the upper surface of the raised block portion is concave.

Claims (3)

1. A carpet seam skate comprising: a substantially rectangular panel having A first major flat surface, means consisting essentially of a cup defining an opening adapted to receive and support a knee positioned directly on the other major surface of the panel opposite the first major surface with the cup opening oriented primarily towards one end of the panel, and a raised block portion positioned on the same side of the panel as is the cup between the cup opening and the end of the panel towards which the cup is oriented, whereby a worker may readily engage and disengage the seam skate to flatten and merge a carpet seam.
2. A seam skate as set forth in claim 1 in which both the exposed open surface of the cup and the upper surface of the raised block portion are padded.
3. A seam skate as set forth in claim 2 in which the upper surface of the raised block portion is concave.
