To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK. P. MUssER, of Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State ofPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Attachments for Thin-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a thillcoupling, showing my improvement attached in operative position thereto. Fig. 2isa 10ngitudinal vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my invention removed from the thill-coupling.

My invention has relation to attachments for thill'couplings for vehicles; and it has for its object to provide a device, as will be hereinafter fully described, that can be easily and conveniently attached to the ordinary coupling now in use to prevent rattling of the several parts of the same. I

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the axle of a vehicle, to which an ordinary clip, B,-having projecting perforated ears 0, is secured. To these perforated ears is pivoted, by means of a bolt and nut, D and E, respectively, the thill-iron F.

A denotes an L-shaped metallic piece having a T-head, M, and a screw-threaded aperture, N, in its base. A set-screw, 0, projecting with its upper reduced and smooth end through this aperture, has swiveled to its said reduced end a socket-plate, P, formed with inclined ends Q, and upwardly-projecting arms R at its sides. Seated in this plate and protected from lateral displacement by the upwardly-projecting arms is an elastic pad, S,

the elastic pad, while the recess in the rear has for its object to accommodate the ends of r clip plates or ties, so as to allow my invention to be applied to thiltcouplings, where the tieplates or the clips are of different lengths, and at the same'time retaining it in a vertical or nearly vertical position, as shown in the accompanying drawings.

The manner of attaching my invention is as follows: The pivotal bolt D and thethill-iron are removed and the L-shaped piece is inserted between the perforated ears, with its T-head resting upon the upper edges of the same. The elastic pad is then placed in the socket-plate and the thill-iron secured to the ears of the clip, as hereinbefore described. It will be seen that it is simple and strong in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and is exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it is designed,

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesv 1. In an attachment for thill-couplings, the combination of an L-shaped piece having a screw-threaded aperture in its base, and a T-. head with a set-screw, asocket-plate swiveled thereto, said socket-plate formed with inclined ends and upwardly-projecting arms, and an elastic pad the lower forward and rear edges of which are beveled and its top concaved, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
