DANIEL E. HULL, or ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
THlLL-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,246, dated June 12, 1883. Application filed February 21, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL E. HULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Anti-Rattling Attachment for Thill- Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to anti-rattling attachments to thill-couplings, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient device that can be readily and conveniently operated and adjusted.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a thill-coupling having my improved anti-rattling attachment. Fig. 2is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is another vertical sectional view taken transversely. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the antirattling attachment detached. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the attachment, illustrating a modification.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the thill-coupling, which may be of various styles and constructions; but that in this case comprises a simple clip, 13, having the projecting plates or ears 0 0, between which the thill D is secured by a transverse bolt, E.
F is the anti-rattling attachment, which comprises an elastic cushion or body, G, preferably formed of rubber, having its outer face, H, concaved or curved, as at I, to conform to the curvature of the eye J of the thill-iron K, against which latter the said cushion is adapted to be compressed by means of a screw-bolt,
L, that works through the cushion, and is provided with a compressiounut or its equivalent.
The bolt L is provided with a head-plate, M, that is preferably provided with side shoulders, N N, which engage the ears 0 C of the clip B, on their under'edges, and the thumb-nut 0 works on the end of the bolt that projects above'the cushion, a plate or washer, I being preferably interposed between the nut and cushion for the protection of the latter.
In the modification shownin Fig. 5 of the drawings the bolt L is adapted to work through the shouldered plate M by turning the said bolt, the latter being provided with a screwhead, Q, for this purpose.
The operation and advantages of my inven tion are obvious. The attachment can be readily adjusted, and will effectually prevent .rattling of the thill by the compression of the cushion against the eye of the latter.
I claim as my invention As an improvement in thill-couplings, the combination of the clip B, having the projecting ears 0 G, the elastic cushion G, arranged tightly between the clip and thill-iron, so that when it is compressed at the top it will expand at the bottom, the screw-threaded bolt L, having the head Q, and the cross-plate M", having the central screw-threaded perforation, by
which it works on the bolt L, and formed with the shoulders N N to engage the ears 0 C, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL E. HULL. \Vitnesses \VM. B. THOMPSON, JAMEs M. DODGE.
