The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient holder for holding the necks ofstringed instrumentssuch as violins, guitars, &c.in the instrument-cases; also upon music-stands used in orchestras, &c.

My invention consists in an internallythreaded socket adapted to be secured to the bottom of the instrumentcase, and a standard fitted to the socket and provided with a fork adapted to receive the neck of the instrument, and furnished with aclamping device for holding the neck of the instrument firmly in the fork.

The socket A, of wood or other suitable material, is designed to be attached to the bottom of theinstrument-case, as shown in Fig. 1,

and is internally threaded to receive the stand.

A fork, O, which is attached to or formed upon the upper end of the standard B, is fitted to the neck of the instrument in connection with which the holder is to be used, and is provided, with a yielding lining, a, of chamoisskin, velvet, or other material. In one arm ofthe fork is formed a mortise, b, in which is pivoted an arm, D, which is capable of closing the opening of the fork, the said arm being provided with a yielding lining, a, of cork or analogous material, for engaging the strings and finger-board of the instrument.

The arm D is prolonged beyond its pivot d, and is connected with one end of an elastic band, E, the opposite end of the said band being connected with the fork 0, near the bottom thereof. When the arm D is closed down Serial No. 230,533. (No model.)

My improved stringed-instrument holder prevents injury to the instrument while it is being carried, by holding it securely in its place in the instrument-case.

My improved stringed-instrument holder can be placed in any music-stand of any theater to keep the instrument perpendicular.

My improved stringed-instrument holder can also be used as apipe-hanger, and in railroad-cars as an umbrella or cane holder.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.- Ina stringed-instrument holder, the combination of a standard or support having a fork adapted to receive the neck of the instrument, a pivoted arm arranged to close the fork and confine the neck of the instrument, and means for holding the said arm in a closed position, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the standard B and fork O, of the arm D, pivoted to one arm of the fork and provided with the elastic opening-spring E, and the spring-catch F,adapted to hold the arm D in a closed position, substantially as described.

3. In a stringed-instrument holder, the combination of the internally-threaded socket A,
