ATTORNEY HOISTING AND TRANSPORTING DEVICE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to an apparatus for lifting and carrying a roll of such material as carpet, linoleum, metal, paper and foil.
A variety of devices have been used to transport rolls of materials from one location to another. Many of these devices are used for indoor carrying of rolled materials. One such device comprises a-plurality of cylindrical rollers supported on a frame having wheels thereon, said rollers forming an arcuate surface upon which a roll of material is placed to be transported. Often, the lifting is manually done in placing the material into position on the transporting device and again is manually done in placing it on the ground. With the advent of outdoor carpeting where often large areas are to be covered with materials of substantial weight and of varying lengths and roll diameters, handling problems associated therewith have become more acute. At any rate, the prior art is believed deficient in not rendering convenient apparatus for elevating, transporting, and lowering such material with easy maneuverability, especially over uneven terrain.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The subject invention provides a dependable and simply constructed carpet carrier having at least two inclined U-. shaped beams arranged to straddle the rolled material so that a hoisting mechanism associated with the beams can readily lift the material into the arch formed by the beams. The invention further provides a hoisting means and wheels connected to the U-shaped beams as to provide a rigid construction which provides an economic and effective way of transporting and handling rolled material. The subject apparatus can be easily positioned and maneuvered into a given location by hand without a coupling or vehicle hitch device. Thus, the primary object of the present invention is to provide a straddle type of carrier including a lifting mechanism which is well adapted to transport loads, especially rolls of materials over uneven terrain. These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent, reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully described and claimed.
Briefly, in accordance with the invention, the apparatus for hoisting and transporting a roll of material is shown and claimed comprises two frame members, each of which having a pair of wheels in tandem, at least two inclined U-shaped, arched beams joined to the frame members and extending from a point intermediate the pair of wheels, a horizontally disposed spine secured to the upper portion of the arched beams, said spine being substantially midway between the spaced wheels, a demountable shaft for the roll of material to be transported, said shaft being positioned under the arch of the U-shaped beams and substantially parallel to the horizontally disposed spine, the longitudinal axes of said shaft being in alignment with the direction of the movement of the wheels, means mounted on said spine for lifting and lowering the demountable shaft, and locking means connected to the lifiing means for securing the demountable shaft in a fixed position in close proximity to the horizontally disposed spine.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The drawing shows a perspective view illustrating the hoistin g and transporting apparatus of the present invention.
In refen'ing to the drawing, the numerals l and designate frame members having wheels 11 mounted in tandem thereon. Located midway and secured to the frame members 10 and 10' are swivel collars 16 and 16 respectively. Two inclined and inverted U-shaped, arched beams 15 and 15' are secured to the swivel collars 16 and 16, the legs of the inverted beams 15 and 15 being secured to stud columns 17 and 17' which are positioned within the swivel collars 16 and 16'. A horizontally disposed L-shaped spine 26 is positioned lengthwise above the wheel assemblies and intersects brace sheem 39 and 39' which are welded to the under side of the bight portion of the U-shaped beams 15 and 15'.
In efiect, a free space is defined within the U-shaped framework whereby a load as in the form of a roll of material may be easily straddled and hoisted by an appropriate lifting mechanism. The swivel action of the collar 16 and 16 permit the framework formed by the joined beams to rotate forward and backward by manual tilting by the operator in positioning the apparatus.
A demountable shaft 25 is centrally disposed and situated under the arch of the U-shaped beams, the demountable shaft 25 being substantially parallel to the horizontally disposed element. The shaft 25 itself is an elongated cylindrical hollow pipe having end members 19 and 19' adapted to be engaged by eyed hooking plates 20 and 20'.
Supporting spine 26 carries a pair of end pulleys 21 and 22 and a center pulley located intermediate the length of shaft 25. Two main cables 28 and 29 are joined respectively to plates 20 and 20 for engagement with end members 19 and 19' of shaft 25. The cable 28 extends over the pulley 22 and is secured to an anchoring segment 30 which has a chain 31 coupled thereto for locking engagement with holding member 32 which is secured to the lower portion of spine 26. Cable 29 passes over pulley 21 and then over the center pulley 23 and is secured to segment 30. A main pulley 33 is demountably secured to the holding member 32 by a hook and eye arrangement and is attached to some winding and unwinding means not shown as an electric motor or by some hand-crank device via cable 12.
It is understood that any type of towing vehicle may be employed which is equipped with winding means or an equivalent mechanism to which a cable 12 for pulleys 33 may be attached can be successfully employed with the invention.
A suitable number of braces 27 may be used to reinforce the shaft 26 and serve as protective guides for the cable 28 and 29. A roll of material 14 to be hoisted and moved is positioned on the on the ground and the shaft 25 placed through the opening of the roll, allowing the end members 19 and 19' to protrude. Plates 20 and 20' are secured to end members 19 and 19' and the cable 12 is pulled whereby cables 28 and 29 hoist the roll to a position directly beneath spine 26. During transportation the roll is locked in position by the chain 31 which is placed at some link through a slot in member 32.
A number of changes may be made in the general construction and arrangement of my invention without departing from my invention and it is my intention to cover by the appended claims, any modified forms of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim:
