BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION (1) Field of the invention This invention relates generally to headwear and more particularly towards a novelty combination hat and wig which is both useful and decorative and is particularly suited for cold Weather wear.

(2) Description of the prior art SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention features novelty headwear comprising a cap portion, typically knitted or crocheted from wool strands, for example, and preferably of one color with several courses of different colored elongated strands connected in overlapping relation around the marginal inner edge of the cap, gathered into braids free hanging from the cap and giving the appearance of braided hair.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings, the reference character 10 generally indicates an article of headwear made according to the invention and characterized generally by a cap portion 12 and depending braids 14 and 16. The cap portion 12 preferably is of knit or crocheted construction, preferably of a selected color or combination of colors lCC and which may be provided with decorative fringes or other decoration as desired,

In the practice of this invention the upper part of the cap portion may be loosely or tightly knit whereas it is desirable that the lower portion be rather closely knit in an annular band indicated generally by the reference character 18 about the lower margin of the cap portion. This band provides a strengthened reinforcing support for the braids 14 and 16 which are attached to the cap portion. The reinforcing band 18 is formed into a fold, as best shown in FIG. 2, extending about the lower edge of the cap.

Attached to the cap all about the margin are several annular courses of elongated strands 20, each strand being doubled and tied to the cap by a knot such as shown in FIG. 2. Each strand is tied in closely adjacent relation to adjacent strands and arranged in two or three parallel courses about the cap margin. The courses are arranged in superimposed relation, the outer course being connected to the top inner fold line 22 of the fold and carried downwardly and outwardly through outer lower fold line 24 in a row about the cap. To provide more body or thickness to the hair additional rows of courses may be added particularly towards the front portion of the cap. Another course 26 is connected at the mid-portion of the fold below the fold line 22, and another row of course 28 is connected along the lower fold line 24 beneath both upper outer courses. The free-hanging double strands are then gathered preferably on either side of the cap and braided as shown in FIG. 1. The braids may then be secured against unravelling by means of a ribbon 30 or other device as desired.

The strands 20 typically are twisted wool stock such as used in knitting and preferably although not necessarily is of a color different from that employed in the cap portion and desirably is of a color similar to that of natural hair.

The headwear is strong, durable and warm and serves as a novel hat and wig combination to be worn for outdoor activities such as skating, skiing or the like. The braids provide an unusual decorative effect which also cover the ears of the wearer against the cold. With the cap in place, the wearer, on first impression appears to have natural long braids exposed from under a stocking cap. The strands forming the braids are tightly secured to the cap portion and cannot come loose since they form an integral part of the headwear.

While the invention has been described with particular reference to the illustrated embodiment it will be understood that numerous modification thereto will appear to those skilled in the art. Accordingly the above description and accompanying drawings should be taken as illustrative of the invention and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described the invention what I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. Headwear comprising:

(a) a cap portion adapted to be worn on the head and dimensioned to cover a substantial part thereof,

(b) said cap portion being knitted from yarn strands,

(c) elongated yarn strands connected to said cap portion about the marginal edge thereof and gathered into braids freely hanging therefrom,
