This invention relates to improvements in womens hats, and especially of a type particularly intended for general use as a sport or outdoor hat for the summer season, though it is not limited to such use.

The principal objects of my invention are to provide a hat which may be easily laundered; one which may be reversed or turned inside out to give the wearer the use of another color without having to detach any parts of the hat, and practicaily form two hats out of one; and one which though made of non foraminous materials will always allow the necessary circulation of air to the head.

A further object of the invention is to.

such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:

Fig. 1 is a perspective elevation of the hat as ready for wearing.

Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the crown elements detached.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the hat with the brim unrolled or straightened out and the crown elements separated, to permit of laundering or reversing of the hat.

Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the parts of the hat are all made of flexible or semi-flexible material, preferably a light textile fabric of a washable nature and white or colored, as may be desired.

Heavier and warmer materials may however be used if the demand for the same should arise.

In the preferred form of hat as illustrated I provide a brim portion 1, preferably made of two endless strips of material placed together and seamed along their top and bottom edges. The brim is so formed that 1t may be turned in either direction to form a roll as shown in Fig. 1.

ments 2, also preferably of a double thickness of material, as shown in Fig. 4t. The number of these elements is not limited, though I preferably employ five of the same. The shapes of these elements is such that when gathered together adjacent their upper ends a crown of rounded and symmetrical contour is formed. When this is done the side edges of the elements are spaced somewhat from each other due to the natural hang of the goods as shown in Fig. 1. Each element then in effect is practically the segment of a hemisphere or similar body.

hen arranging the hat for use a ring 5 of bone, ivory or other non-corrosive material, surrounds all the necks of the crown elements holding them in place. To install the ring each member 3 in turn is temporarily constricted and passed through the ring. When said members then reassume their natural shape they will of course prevent undesired slipping of the ring from the necks, since said members are wider than the necks. These uppermost portions 3 not only prevent the undesired displacement of the ring but provide an ornamental top knot for the hat, as will be evident.

If desired, the ring may be permanently attached to the hat by a flexible element 6 secured thereto and to the edge of one of the necks.

Instead of a brim of uniform width, the

lower ends of the crown elements may be held together by a narrow band as indicated at 7 in Fig. 3 with a visor 8 secured to and projecting downwardly from said band.

To launder the hat it is only necessary to withdraw the ring from the necks when the crown elements may be spread out and separated from each other for individual washing and ironing.

If desired to reverse the hat or turn it in side out, the ring is removed and the elements 2 depressed so as to pass through the brim opening, the roll of the brim or the visor, if such is employed, being also reversed. This of course so arranges the parts that what was previously the inside of the hat now becomes the outside and vice versa. At the same time it is not necessary to detach q ni the crown elements from the brim in order to thus rearrange them.

If the two thicknesses of material for the brim and the crown elements are of different colors, an entirely different effect is obtained with such reversal of parts.

The ring is vertically adjustable to a certain extent on the crown, so that by moving the ring up or down the crown area may be varied to accommodate different sized heads or various method of dressing the hair. In other words the height and size of the crown may be adjusted to lit the head.

The crown elements having no connection with each other between their ends, they will normally separate from each other somewhat to allow of a circulation of air therebetween to pass over the head.

The surfaces of the elements 2 may be smooth throughout or they may be provided with plait-s, tucks, folds or other ornamentive features.

I have shown and specified two thicknesses of material for the brim and crown elements. In the event however that felt or other heavy goods should be used, a single thickness of such goods, with the edges bound, would be employed.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.

\Vhile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Havin thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A hat including a brim portion, a crown portion, said crown portion comprising a plurality of sectors, each of said sectors comprising a widened base portion, a widened end portion and a. narrow neck portion be tween the widened portions, said sectors be ing permanently attached to the brim portion at their base edges and having their side edges free, and means for holding the said crown sectors together at their neck portions in detachable relation.

2. A hat including a brim portion, a crown portion, said crown portion comprising a plurality of sectors, each of said sectors comprising a widened base portion, a widened end portion and narrow neck portion between the widened portions, said sectors being permanently attached to the brim portion at their base edges and having" their side edges free, and a ring adapted to fit over the widened end portions of the crown sectors and around their neck portions to hold the same together in detachable relation.
