3,137,098 GARMENT COLLAR CONSTRUCTION Alvin A. Abalman, Munster, Ind., assignor to Wmer Manufacturing Co., Inc, Hammond, Ind., a corporation of Indiana 1 Filed Nov. 13, 1962, Ser. No. 237,245
4 Claims. (Cl. 2-98) This invention relates to improvements in wearing apparel and is more particularly concerned with the novel construction of theneckband and turndown collar of a jacket so as to adapt it to receive secured detachably thereto an auxiliary collar.
Heretofore, garments having detachable or supplementary collars have been provided with a slide fastener element that is secured to the garment at the seam normally joining the collar to the garment body. Securing a slide fastener element in the neckband seam has tended to stiffen the neckband unnecessarily with the result that a smooth presentable tailored appearance is impossible. Also a slide fastener element secured in thisfashion has its metal parts or teeth exposed in a manner to contact the neck of a wearer thus adding to the discomfort of an ill fitting neckband.
The present construction is designed to overcome these and other objectionable characteristics of known constructions. More particularly, the auxiliary collar is held in place by a slide fastener assembly, one component of which is secured to the turndown collar at a place other than in the seam connecting the turndown collar to the garment body. It further is normally substantially concealed by a strip of covering material so that at no time will the metal parts of the slide fastener assembly ever come into contact with the neck of the wearer.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide novel means to detachably secure an auxiliary collar to a garment.
Another object is to provide an auxiliary collar securing meansat a location other than at the usual seam connecting the usual turndown collar to the garment body.
Another object is to provide novel means in a garment to cover a slide fastener component or assembly to prevent its coming into contact with the neck of a wearer.
Another object is to provide a garment neckband construction which is not expensive to manufacture, and which is very efficient and satisfactory in use.
With the foregoing and such other objects in view,
.which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in which the same characters of reference are employed to identify corresponding parts:
FIG. 1 is a view of the upper portion of a garment, showing the accessory collar partially detached from the turndown collar.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary view of the upper portion of the garment showing the accessory collar fully attached.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken sub-.
stantially on line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
United States Patent Of 3,137,008 Patented June 16, 1964 ice 2 in FIG. 3, the collar 15 may comprise at least two thicknesses of material 16, 17, definingupper and under faces, each joined in seam v 1. .19 respectively to the body material, lining and lapels.
A narrow st ,'p of material 21 provided for a purpose to be made appfarentpr'esently, is substantiallyv coextene L sive With the length of the collar and is stitched along its lowerimargin in seam 18. A slide fastener component 22 is arranged between the upper face of the collar and said s rip as showman? 9 utward y f s 8 and i stringer is secured as by a row of stitches 23 to both the strip and upper collar face 16, and in such position that its metal teeth 24 are inwardly of the free edge 25 of strip 21. This manner of relative arrangement of parts insures that the metal teeth 24 are covered at all times by strip 21 so as to be held out of contact with. the neck of the wearer and further so as to be concealed from full view. The flexibility of the neckband at seams 18, 19, so necessary for a tailored fit around the neck of the wearer, is not impaired by the mounting of the substantially stiff stringer of slide fastener component 22 because of it having been sewn to the collar at a point where the collar lies flat rather than in the seam 18.
An auxiliary collar 26 is fabricated to lie over the turndown collar 15 and it may have pockets 26a at its ends into which the corners of the collar 15 may be tucked.
Buttons 27 (only one shown) carried on the underside of turndown collar 15 may be provided to be received in a button hole 28 in each pocket wall. The lower or inner edge of the auxiliary collar has secured to it a companion slide fastener component 29 for cooperative engagement 7 that an auxiliary collar may be easily and quickly attached Referring to the disclosure of a representative garment V which is secured a turndown collar 15. As best shown to or detached from the turndown collar and that when attached it will present the appearance of an integral assembly and one wherein the attaching means is concealed from view and at no time does said means come into contact with the neck of the wearer. The attachment is such that the normal tailored fit is retained. It should be evident also that minor changes may be made in the exemplary structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: V
1. A garment having a turndown collar comprised of an upper fabric layer and an under fabric layer, a seam joining said layers together along at least one edge and to the garment body along the opposite edge, a slide fastener component secured to the upper fabric layer by a row of stitches, said stitches being spaced from the seam joining the collar to the body, a covering strip overlying said slide fastener component and secured along one edge in said last named seam, said covering strip being of a length greater than the length of the slide fastener component so as to cover the ends of said component, an auxiliary collar overlying the upper fabric layer, a complemental slide fastener component secured to one edge of said auxiliary collar and releasably engaged with the first named slide fastener component and securing the said one edge to the turndown collar, and means detachably securinglother portions of said auxiliary collar to the turndown co ar.
2. The garment recited in claim 1, in which the covering strip is additionally secured by the row of stitches securing the slide fastener component to the fabric.
3. The garment recited in claim 1, in which said other joining the collar to the body, a covering strip overlying said slide fastener component and secured along one edge in said last named seam, said covering strip being additionally secured by the row of stitches securing the slide fastener component to the collar, said'covering strip being of a length greater than the length of the slide fastener component so as to cover, the ends of said component, an
turndown collar.
auxiliary collar overlying the upper fabric layer, a complemental slide fastener component secured to one edge of said auxiliary collar and freleasably engaged with the first named slide fastener component and securing the said one edge to the turndown collar, and means detachably securing other portions of said auxiliary collar to the References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 2,264,314 Johns Dec. 2, 1941 3,085,249 De Angelis Apr. 16, 1963 FOREIGN PATENTS 371,610 GreatBritain Apr. 28, 1932
