Filed Nov. 12, 1963, Ser. No. 322,955 3 Claims. (Cl. 24899) This invention relates to a holder or hanger for paper bags and the like.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved hanger or holder made of deformable material such as iron wire which may be coated with enamel, lacquer, plastic or the like and which may be used to hang bags made of paper or similar material from supports such as the back of a chair, front face of a drawer, washtub, bed rail, backside of the front seat of an automobile and the like, so that the open bag is conveniently supported to receive articles which it may be desired to place therein.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved holder or support for paper bags or the like which is made of deformable material such as iron wire such that an upturned portion thereof is adapted to be positioned under a cuff formed around the open top of the paper bag for holding the paper bag in open position for receiving articles that it is desired to place therein.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a paper bag hanger or support that is made with an upturned bottom portion which is adapted to be received under the cult formed around the top of the open paper bag for supporting the bag, the top portion of the hanger or support being provided with a downwardly-turned part which is adapted to be hooked over the front end of an open drawer or the back of a chair for supporting the hanger and bag thereon.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved hanger for supporting open paper bags, said hanger having two side members of S-shape which are joined together by a horizontal bottom member, an intermediate member and a horizontal top member, the horizontal bottom member being adapted to be received under the cult formed around the top of the paper bag for supporting the bag in open position and the intermediate cross member having a magnetized portion for supporting articles of magnetic material such as hairpins or clamps and the like while the hair curlers are supported in the open bag.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a paper bag holding device that is inexpensive to manufacture out of iron wire or similar material which may be readily bent or formed into the desired shape. This device is made with a curved upper portion which is adapted to be hooked over an open drawer, washtub, back of a chair, side rail of a hospital bed or the backside of the front seat of an automobile and the paper sack which is hung on the lower curve portion of the device in its open position is easily accessible for receiving articles that it is desired to deposit therein.
Other and further objects of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates from the following specification, claims and drawing in which, briefly:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the paper bag hanger of this invention showing the upper downwardly curved part thereof hooked over the front wall of an open drawer and showing the bottom upwardly curved part thereof positioned under the cuff formed in the top part of the open paper bag;
FIG. 2 is a view of the hanger of this invention showing it supporting a bag of smaller size;
FIG. 3 is a front view of this bag support;
FIG. 4 is a side view, and
FIG. 5 is a view of this device hung on the side rail of a hospital bed for supporting the patients signal device.
Referring to the drawing in detail, reference numerals 10 and 11 designate substantially S-shaped side members of this bag holding device. These side members are provided with downwardly curved upper parts 12 and 13 that are made integral therewith and these parts are connected by the substantially horizontal member 14. The lower parts of the side members 10 and 11 are provided with upward1y- curved portions 16 and 17 which are connected together by the substantially horizontal member 15. In addition, the central parts of these side members 10 and 11 are connected together by the spacer member 18. The ends of this spacer member 18 may be looped around the side members 10 and 11 or they may be attached thereto by welding or the like. The sides 10 and 11, including the downwardly curved parts 12 and 13 and the upwardly curved parts 16 and 17 and the horizontal members 14 and 15, may all be formed out of one piece of wire or strip material which is bent into the desired shape and the ends of the wire or strip, which may be positioned in the center of member 14 or elsewhere, may be joined by welding or the like.
The upper curved portions 12 and 13 are adapted to be hooked over the front wall of the drawer 19 of the table 20 to provide a convenient support for the device and the paper sack 21. The upper part of the paper sack 21 is provided with a downwardly extending cufl 22 which is formed by folding the upper part of the open paper sack downward over the outside of the sack. The upwardly extending curved portions 16 and 17 of the bag-holding device are adapted to be inserted under the cufi 22 so that the substantially horizontal member 15 engages the paper sack 21 under the cult 22 at the crease thereof.
The upwardly extending members 16 and 17 are positioned substantially at the corner parts of the paper sack 21 and the member 15 extends between these corner portions so that it engages the paper sack substantially over its greatest width and, thus, supports the paper sack in its open position for receiving articles that it is desired to deposit therein. Thus, the horizontal member 15 provides a paper sack engaging member of substantial length so that as articles are placed into the bag 21 and the weight thereof is increased there will be less tendency for the bag to tear than if it were supported over a smaller area. Also, having the member 15 engage the bag over substantially the entire length of the crease formed in the longer width of the paper bag, functions to keep the paper bag open as the weight of the bag, due to the articles deposited therein is increased.
The sides 10 and 11 of this device may be made substantially straight, and the lengths of the horizontal members 14 and 15 may be made substantially equal as shown in FIG. 1, or these sides 10 and 11 may be inclined toward each other so that the horizontal members 14 and 15 are of different lengths and different sizes of bags may be supported thereby, depending upon which member is inserted under the bag cult. The sides 10 and 11 may also be shaped as shown in FIG. 3 by bending parts thereof inwardly so that the horizontal member 14 is substantially shorter than the member 15. Thus, when the member 15 is inserted under the cuff 22 of the bag, a larger bag may be accommodated than when the device is inverted and the shorter member 14 is inserted under the cult 22, as shown in FIG. 2.
This device may be formed of iron wire which may be readily bent into the desired configuration and the iron wire may be coated with suitable enamel, plastic or the like. The spacer member 18 may be provided with a magnet attached thereto or the member itself may be magnetized for the purpose of holding hairpins or clips while the hair curlers and other articles may be placed into the paper sack 21 while this device is used for holding these articles during the hair makeup or preparation.
This device may be hung on the side rail 19a of a hospital bed, as shown in FIG. and the spacer member 18 thereof may itself be magnetized or provided with a permanent magnet 18a which is used to magnetically grip the iron plate 18b. A suitable electric switch which is connected to the electric cord 18c is attached to the plate 18b and is held by the magnet so that it is accessible to the patient occupying the bed whereby the patient may use it for signaling purposes. This eliminates the necessity of pinning, the signal device to the bed and also holds it within easy view and reach of the patient.
While I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the form shown so that its scope should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
What I claim is:
1. A bag-holding device comprising a pair of curved substantially S-shaped side members that are adapted to be disposed in a vertical position when the device is in use so that the upper curve portions of said members each have a downwardly dependingpart connected together by a substantially horizontal upper member, said upper curved portions of said side members being adapted to be hooked over a piece of furniture for supporting the device, the lower curve of portion of said members each have an upwardly extending part connected together by a substantially horizontal bottom member, a spacer member connected between the intermediate parts of said' S-shaped members, said bottom member extending up into the crease of a downwardly extending cuff formed around the open end of a paper bag for supporting the paper bag on the device in the open position for receiving articles to be deposited therein.
2. A bag holding device comprising a pair of curved substantially S-shaped side members that are adapted to be disposed in a vertical position when the device is in use so that the upper curve portions of said members each have a downwardly depending part connected together by a substantially horizontal upper member, said upper curved portions of said side members being adapted to be hooked 4 over a piece of furniture for supporting the device, the
lower curve of portion of said members each have an upwardly extending part connected together by a substantially horizontal bottom member, a spacer member connected between the intermediate parts of said S-shaped members, said bottom member extending up into the crease of a downwardly extending cuff formed around the open end of a paper bag for supporting the paper bag on the device in the open position for receiving articles to be deposited therein, said horizontal members being of different lengths so that different sizes of paper bags may be supported by the device depending upon which of said horizontal members is inserted under the cuff of the paper bag.
3. A bag holding device comprising a pair of curved substantially S-shaped side members that are adapted to be disposed in a vertical position when the device is in use so that the upper curve portions of said members each have a downwardly depending part connected together by a substantially horizontal member, said upper curved portions of said side members being adapted to be hooked over a piece of furniture for supporting the device, the lower curve of portion of said members each have an upwardly extending part connected together by a substantially horizontal bottom member, said bottom member extending up into the crease of a downwardly extending cuff formed around the open end of a paper bag for supporting the paper bag on the device in the open position for receiving articles to be deposited therein, a spacer member including a magnetic member for supporting magnetic articles having non-magnetic parts asso ciated therewith supported by said bag, said spacer member having ends thereof connected to the intermediate parts of said S-shaped members.

Claims (1)

1. A BAG-HOLDER DEVICE COMPRISING A PAIR OF CURVED SUBSTANTIALLY S-SHAPED SIDE MEMBERS THAT ARE ADAPTED TO BE DISPOSED IN A VERTICAL POSITON WHEN THE DEVICES IS IN USE SO THAT THE UPPER CURVE PORTION OF SAID MEMBERS EACH HAVE A DOWNWARDLY DEPENDING PART CONNECTED TOGETHER BY A SUBSTANTIALLY HORIZONTAL UPPER MEMBER, SAID UPPER CURVED PORTIONS OF SAID SIDE MEMBERS BEING ADAPTED TO BE HOOKED OVER A PIECE OF FURNITURE FOR SUPPORTING THE DEVICE, THE LOWER CURVE OF PORTION OF SAID MEMBERS EACH HAVE AN UPWARDLY EXTENDING PART CONNECTED TOGETHER BY A SUBSTANTIALLY HORIZONTAL BOTTOM MEMBER, A SPACER MEMBER CONNECTED BETWEEN THE INTERMEDIATE PARTS OF SAID S-SHAPED MEMBERS, SAID BOTTOM MEMBER EXTENDING UP INTO THE CREASE OF A DOWNWARDLY EXTENDING CUFF FORMED AROUND THE OPEN END OF A PAPER BAG FOR SUPPORTING THE PAPER BAG ON THE DEVICE IN THE OPEN POSITION FOR RECEIVING ARTICLES TO BE DEPOSITED THEREIN.
